Windows Live Mail

Hi All,

Just took delivery of my whizzy new PC running Vista Home Premuim (x64).

Hmmmm, starting to wish I'd stuck with my Pentium4 on XP Pro. Well, actually did not have much choice as the old beast died a death. Mobo trashed!!

I got the message from M$ that HotMail would no longer be supported on Outlook, and have been trying to install Live Mail. Jeeeeezzzz!!!

I keep getting the error "Sorry, we couldn't install these programs". How helpful is THAT!! I finally tracked down a standalone install kit for WLM and now have messenger installed and (eventually) working.

Does anyone know where I can get the Live Mail installer as a standalone?? This is driving me to distraction ....

Cheers,
Ripface.

P.S. I take it I'm not the only bod in the world with this prob? errr, am I?

Re: Windows Live Mail

Ha Ha .. Ha Ha .. Ha Ha .. CLUNK!

That was me laughing my head off!!

Seriously though, yes I 've googled until my fingers bled. I've downloaded wlinstaller, and whenever I try and install Live Mail, I just get the error message stated in my first post.

I only managed to install Messenger because I sourced a standalone install kit for it. "wlinstaller" now recognises that Messenger is installed, but still gives the error for "Mail".

Cheers,
Ripface.

Re: Windows Live Mail

Hmmmm,

Just reread your mail .... more s-l -o-o-w-l-y!!

I'd assumed that "Live Mail" was a standalone mail utility that ran under Windows. Tell me it's not the crappy web frontend!!

Cheers,
Ripface.

Re: Windows Live Mail

Hey Ripface,
Live Mail is a standalone mail program that comes with WLInstaller, Have you read this thread for running the hidden installer?

Re: Windows Live Mail

Hi Dmex,

Yes, I'd seen that thread and thought - Cool! A fix!!

Unfortunately when I navigate to the folder there is no "WindowsLiveInstaller" directory in the "Common Files" are on my system. Looked in both the "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)" folders.

Lemme detail what I'm doing ...

1. Download wlinstaller from the web
2. Run wlinstaller
3. Select "Mail" from the bottom part of the installer window
4. Mail appears in the top part
5. After a few minutes I get a red "X" next to it and a message ....
6. "Sorry, we couldn't install these programs"

Navigating to the "Program Files" areas shows that there is no "WindowsLiveInstaller" directory in the common files folder.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Cheers,
Ripface.

Re: Windows Live Mail

Sup Ripface,

Who knows whats causing the error with WLInstaller, it just downloads the install and runs the setup afterwards...

download and run the installers manually then it should install them fine, you need both files here: Live Suite - Windows Live SkyDrive

Re: Windows Live Mail

Hey Dmex,

Top Job!! Thanks for the links. That's *exactly* what I was looking for. Downloaded and Windows Live Mail installed successfully.

Smooth!

... now can anyone tell me the command line editor for Vista?

"edit" does not seem to exist any more ...

Cheers,
Ripface.

The Msngr_9 file has only been released to Microsoft Connect users and is still beta after more than 18months...

The best commandline editor would be Powershell...Download details: Windows PowerShell 2.0 CTP

There are a few hundred extensions for Powershell for just about anything.
