Vista - Windows Live Installer is driving me up a wall

I have the basic vista home. I'm having trouble installing windows live messenger on it. within 30 secs of running the installer, its aborting (i have been trying it off and on over the span of last 10 hours). i turned off both windows and the third-party firewall. temporary internet files are cleared. never used a dial-up network on this pc. running the installer as an admin (right-clicking on the setup exe file allows you to do that). I don't know what else to do. at this point, I'm really thinking its a poorly developed product. Does anybody have any suggestion. I just bought this laptop and I was trying to install all the softwares on it that I use

Sign into your account with Windows Live.
Go to where it says messenger. Then hit download and install.
You must do this WHILE SIGNED IN (wrote that big because it is a must do)
They must verifey the account other wise it will not install.
I know I went though the same thing.

Are you trying to use the Messenger 8.5 Public release or the Wave3 2009 beta Messenger from Messenger beta - Windows Live ?

I was trying with the standard release one. I followed jimmy's suggestion and downloaded the beta, which I didn't have any problem with. Looks like the link in ur Windows Live accounts page is for the beta. But it works for me
