| Vista 32bit and XP Pro and XP Home (three computers) | Windows Search on Vista vs on XP I have three computers (i7 920 with Vista, Lenovo S10 netbook with XP Home and IBM Laptop R40 with XP Pro) and I've noticed a difference between how the two versions of Windows Search works. I've installed the corresponding versions on my desktop (i7, Vista) and my laptops. I've installed 5 years worth of e-mails on all systems (don't ask...) as imported storage folders and the Vista version searches all e-mail folders, past and present, just what I wanted (text and subject lines). The XP version also does a complete search but displays the file name instead of the subject line of the e-mail. Question: since the Vista version figured out how to display the subject line using the same source files, is there a way to get the XP version to also display the subject line of an e-mail instead of the file name? It currently displays something like 0A4D3E15-00000465.eml instead of the subject line of the e-mail. Vista Windows Search Version 4.0 32 bit: 2008 (build 12.0.1606) XP Windows Search Version 4.0 for 32 bit, downloaded today off Microsoft's website Thanks, Bob423 Last edited by bob423; 03-13-2009 at 09:59 PM.. |

| Vista 32bit and XP Pro and XP Home (three computers) | Re: Windows Search on Vista vs on XP Well, I got around the problem. If you search using the search pane in Windows Live Mail instead of Window Search, then the subject lines of the e-mails are displayed instead properly. However, I had multiple folders of past e-mails and doing a search on each one separately was a pain. I found I could just copy and paste all past e-mails into one folder, redo the index and I can search on just two folders: the current active one and the one with all the past e-mails. Both show search results with the subject line of the e-mails displayed (Windows Search does not display the subject lines in XP, it does in Vista). You must have Windows Search installed for searching within the text of a message, otherwise you just get a subject line search. When Windows 7 comes out I'll certainly switch all computers over. |
