Windows live photo gallery "import to" problem

Hi, I'm running Vista home premium 64bit. New computer, new operating system
I wanted to import some pics from my camera (nikon D300) and noticed that there is no longer a "camera, photo, scanner wizard" like XP had.

I decided to try and use the windows live photo gallery. I picked the groups I wanted to copy off of my camera. Gave them a name or tag. Went to import options and choose my writable drive to import them to.

I get this box:
options/import options: you cannot import to this folder. Choose another location.

I have tried both a CD / DVD, and I know there is room. I went into windows explorer and manually copied the pics to the writable drive so I know its working.

So my question is: Why wont Windows live photo gallery let me save my photo's off of my camera to my writable drive?

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.
Terri

Re: Windows live photo gallery "import to" problem

Hi Chammari,
So, when you plug in your camera, do you get a window that pops up with “AutoPlay” at the top? You might try unplugging, then plugging in your camera a couple times. A window should (under normal circumstances) pop up with your device name and give you options as to what you’d like to do with it (i.e. import pictures using Windows, import pictures using Windows Live Photo Gallery, open device to view files, etc.).
If that isn’t the case for you, you should be able to do the same thing from within the Windows Live Photo Gallery program, but not to a writeable drive. For this, you will have to first import the photos, then transfer them to the writeable drive.
Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers,

Re: Windows live photo gallery "import to" problem

Greetings,

I do get the pop up box asking me what I want to do with the camera photos.

What you are telling me is that I can no longer write my pictures directly to a DVD or CD without importing them to my hard drive first correct?

I didnt want a copy of a copy is the problem. The old XP scanner/camera wizard let me transfer the origional pic directly to a disk.

I'm now sure why Windows would no longer allow you to transfer your pictures directly to writable media without downloading them first to your drive, do you know?

Is there a way to put the old wizard back on Vista? (grasping at straws here I know) or are there any other programs you can think of that might do this? I have tried Nikon Transfer, Adobe Bridge and couple others, no go so far.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks for the quick reply to my origional question.

Re: Windows live photo gallery "import to" problem

Hi Chammari,
I think you can still do it, I’m looking for a fix. I’ll get back here with something soon. It looks like it might be a setting that you’ll have to switch.
Talk soon,
