I did SP1 last month using the registry trick - As advised above, I disabled everything in the system tray I safely could, including Anti Virus. The install went smoothly - Had to download and install the mandatory updates prior to SP1 itself, which was something like 860 meg since I had nothing pre-staged. I started it and wandered off to watch a race on TV. Result?? It was done before the race was over. It didn't like my Video driver (nVidia 169.25, EVGA 8800GTX OC2), so I cleaned it off manually, and then again with the driver cleaner I have. Rebooted and grabbed the latest beta driver - Works fine since. Application ~wise, Norton 360 didn't like it and pulled a bullsh*t fix with a dialog box forcing the uninstall. Went to Symantec's site and find that last year's version isn't there any more and you have to pay for the new one to get your protection back. Never mind that there's still months left on the old subscription. Yeah yeah - I should have learned a long tome ago, but this is the last time I ever use their sh*t. I hit up Eset and bought/installed their smart security package. Anyways: Else was untouched. For sure it starts a little quicker than it did before. Can't comment on sleep/hibernation since when I'm done I shut the computer off. Besides that, I haven't noticed any change. |

Mne failed and came up with error code 80073712 at 13% downloaded, so I found 'Checksur' kb on the MS site as I also had a failed update with KB943302 which gave the error message 8007371B. I thought i had found my solution with the Checksur update but after downloading it and letting it run, I got the message' Not needed for this computer. I have tried to install KB943302 numerous times and each time it fails! I am not going to be reinstalling Vista Anyone have any advice? I have been having email conversations with MS help for KB943302 but they have not been succesful in correcting the problem and told me to ring an 0870 number. Why should I pay for something that is not my fault??????? Richard |

Did it through Window Update (1/4 download size, plus it's supposedly a more efficient install through WU). Since SP1, all of the little glitchy issues I was having are gone. I had just re-installed Vista about a week prior, so that probably helped make things go smoothly. I'm still without a signed x64 audio driver, so I'm still using a hacked XP version and still have to boot in "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" mode. This is of course HP's fault, not Microsoft's, but at least SP1 seems to have eliminated the clipping and buffer issues I was having before. Last edited by DKqwerty; 03-20-2008 at 04:57 PM. |

I downloaded and installed it, without turning anything off, and have had no problems at all. Tonight I used the cleanup tool and can now never restore back to pre SP1. I gained a surprising amount of disk space. If anyone is interested, this is how to do it: Click Start, type "Vsp1cln" (without the quotes), hit enter then press "Y" in the command prompt. I repeat the warning.....if you do this you will not be able to roll back to a pre SP1 installation. |

(that's Vista64 with pre-release SP1 on one DVD, not Vista64 with installed windows update of SP1 prerelease) So everything worked just fine for months. Got the DVD of Vista64 with SP1 as I'm supposed to. Ran the upgrade path. Just at the very end, after it rebooted and appeared to be installing drivers (I observed the video change from dumb to 1920x1200 and assume it was doing drivers), I got a message box saying "installation failed, restart my computer and do the installation again". Then it said it was restoring my original Vista64 with pre-release SP1, it rebooted, and another dialog said the "installation failed, search microsoft.com for upgrade advisor". Impressive that it restored to a working OS but sad it didn't know everything running was already running on Vista64 with pre-release SP1 . And it couldn't tell me that before upgrade began! |

You have to uninstall the pre-release SP1 update before installing the release version, after uninstalling the pre-release version leave Vista a good hour or so for the windows installer service time to cleanup all the old system files and configurations. Then try re-installing the SP1 release update. |
