Vista post SP1 can't see my external HDD-help!

Hi John,

I tried exactly what you describe,but can't solve the problem. Actually i have mouse, keyboard and the other 2 external hard drive all working fine. As long as i plug this one in, the Vista failed to install USB to IDE driver. I'm really reluctant to uninstall my SP1.

My box is a bit odd, IMAC 20" running on Vista Ultimate SP1

Hi John,

Dont worry, i uninstall SP1 and everything is sweet now. So i'm really disappointed with Microsfot and Vista SP1

Just got a new machine with VISTA HOME EDITION PREMIUM, 32 bit, encountered the very same problem and after searching on the web for weeks with no solutions, stumbled on your post in Vistax64.com.
Did the change on infcache.1 but have questions regarding oem files. I assume the change to -bak is on files only and not on folders, correct? Secondly, there are a bunch of them; there are five unnumbered .dat files and I have numbered files 0 - 49 with three files for each number; does the change apply to all types of files (.inf, .cat, .PNF) or is it applicable only to .inf and .PNF? Either case it's going to be a lot "doctoring" and a reply from you would be appreciated.

Please plug in a USB device to test the results." I,ve sent off my thanks last night. I'm not sure whether I need to go back and undo those permissions etc but I'm well pleased. Glad you like the avatar, I took it at an owl sanctuary. You can use any of your own pics just reduce them to below a MB. Cheers, John

Trust me, it won't help if this problem occured after installing SP1. I have tried all files 0-40 and not succesful. Remove SP1 will do

Hi hdbg62

I don't know enough about it to contradict the above but the problem I had only occurred after installing SP1.
The choice that Terrykim Jin gave me was try this and if it doesn't work uninstall SP1.

I would assume from that the fix doesn't always work. However it worked for me and has continued to work so I think it's worth a try.

I renamed everything which began OEM. There are loads of them and it is very boring and I have no idea what it is doing really but, as I say, it has worked for me.

Am a bit reluctant to remove SP1 but might after checking some more about the ramifications of doing so. Thanks for your time.
