Does anyone know if there has been any updates to windows since the 18th of April? This includes windows defender? I am just not sure if I am getting updates since sp1 was installed. Thanks

Re: any new windows updates lately?

You can get an E-mail Notification from Microsoft prior to updates being released.

See the following article and follow the appropriate links:

Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification

Hope this helps

Re: any new windows updates lately?

I received notification of about 30+ updates from Microsoft. All of them were language packs, which I don't have a need for, so I didn't install them.

And thanks DC187 for the information about getting advanced notification about updates. I use RSS for many sources, and they had an RSS option which was nice.

Re: any new windows updates lately?

Thank you for all the information. I registered and think this will be helpful. I also noticed today when I was on the microsoft website I entered into an update for windows download section and it brought me to my computer and said it was up to date also showed defender being installed at 6:18 am today!!! This was after I checked earlier on my own and it was not there? It was really strange that it didn't show up at 7:30 am but showed up after going into the microsoft site at 11:30 am?

Re: any new windows updates lately?

I have the same version of Vista as you, and I also have SP1 installed. I can confirm that, on my system, there have been no Windows Updates since April 18th until today (April 23rd). Both of these updates were definition updates for Windows Defender, KB915597, viz 1.31.8982.0 and 1.31.9142.0 respectively. Both updates did, incidentally, install automatically with no intervention on my behalf.

Re: any new windows updates lately?

Thank you Dwarf. I signed up to be notified of updates from microsoft and now I have received a couple of emails that I don't understand. Do I need to install this update myself:
<H1>Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB942615)?

There were a couple of other ones listed too.

Re: any new windows updates lately?

The best way to check whether or not you need to install the update is to check Windows Update (WU) yourself. When you manually run WU, it will show you at a glance whether or not your system is up to date. If it is, then on the right hand side it will have 'Windows is up to date' in a green banner together with a green shield with a tick in it. To check for individual updates, click on 'View update history' in the left hand panel. All updates that have been installed since you installed Vista will be listed here. The default sort order is by date, with the most recent at the top of the list. To make things easier, click on 'Name' to have the list sorted alphabetically by name. You can then scroll down the list to see if KB942615 is installed, as well as the others listed in the bulletin. On my system, KB942615 is listed, together with other updates, as being installed on 01/01/2008, although it was probably released earlier. This is because I had only just reinstalled Vista. If you have installed SP1, then this update would have been included with that as SP1 has brought together all important and recommended updates that have been made available since Vista was released. I am considering signing up for the notifications as well. It is important to realise that the notifications apply to all editions of Vista, and that some of them might not necessarily apply to your system. If you want to check on the update status of your system, then there are a couple of programs which might help you. They are the Belarc Advisor and Secunia PSI (links given below). Belarc checks your update status whilst Secunia checks your applications status. Both programs need to be run with administrative credentials. When you run Belarc, you are only interested in the 'System Security Status'. Both 'Virus Protection' and 'Microsoft Security Updates' need to be shown with a green tick. The other category does not apply to Vista. If either category shows red, then you will need to investigate that category by clicking on it. Secunia is fairly self-explanatory. Any vulnerabilities it exposes can be corrected by going to the relevant website(s) for the program(s) concerned and updating the program(s) from there.

Re: any new windows updates lately?

Dwarf,
I did run windows update and it told me that I was up to date. Thank you for the other programs, I will check them out. I am so nervous about windows vista, and I had so many problems with this os since I got it. So, far I am running ok, but I have not tried to hook this computer up with a wireless router to my other computer yet. I know I will prob. have problems because as it stands right now every time my computer wakes up from sleep mode the ip address has problems resetting. I keep getting the those errors in the event log, but I ignore them. They don't bother me now, but I know once I try to do more advanced stuff with this machine I will prob. run into issues. Do you know anything about the task scheduler having problem after sp1 is installed? It is funny, when I try to get into it I get a red box with an x that says the task image has been corrupt? I might send that to microsoft too and see if they have a solution for me.

You may want to look at the Tutorial at the link below.

I hope you can get it sorted out.

Re: any new windows updates lately?

Ted,
I checked out the information you sent me and it doesn't apply to the issue I was talking about. I fixed the problems from sleep mode, so my computer shuts down and starts up and also sleeps just fine. It is the ip problem. The dhcp client in the even viewer that says it can't find the ip and will issue a temp one everytime I wake the computer from sleep or shut down to fix something? I can always get on the internet and it really doesn't take that long, but I also heard the windows vista has a problem with that. I noticed there was a patch listed for this on microsoft website, but I am worried about downloading this and messing other things up. I just think that once I try to work with this baby wireless I will have more problems than I know with the ip recognition and stuff. I don't know much about it yet but I am learning.
