Vista SP1 Instal Fails Everytime

Hello, I have tried installing Windows Vista SP1 roughly 8-10 times now, with no luck any time. It always gets to 98% complete on the first stage, then sits there for awhile before reverting, rebooting, and trying again.

First time I got error code 0x800F0826, and Microsoft directs me here: Error message when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1: "Installation was not successful" or "An internal error occurred while installing the service pack"

None of the resolutions work.

Then I got this message a few times 0x800705B4
Which I have read is a "Timed out" error.

Its always at 98% on stage 1 of 3 that it hangs up before it fails and reverts.

I have given my manufacturer remote access to my PC, they re-registered the windows update dll files, removed any pending/queued updates that may have been causing it to fail(which also cleaned out my update history) and had me download a file titled Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe from Microsoft.

Still no luck, same errors, same time of the install. I have also download and burned to a disk the .ISO file Microsoft has to download of SP1, with no luck still, again same errors at the same time.

If someone could help, it would be much appreciated.

Here is some information from my computer I think might be useful, let me know how to get more of what you need to know if there is any.

Hmm, I did not see your thread when I posted mine. I have the same problem except I actually get all the way through the whole thing and the PC does the final restart and it reverts when it loads into Windows.

Hello,
I searched the Knowledge Base, and 0x800705B4 applies to 4 catagories, but only 1 is remotely applicable. The code is for Windows Vista Beta2. It doesn't make sense at all.

My Computer

I have spent the better part of my day on chat with Microsoft to try to resolve this.

They took remote access to my PC on multiple occasions and tried the following.

Uninstalled my Anti-Virus and Firewall

Reboot.

Start->Run->MSConfig

Through MSConfig under Services click "Hide all Microsoft Services" then select Disable All.

Under the Startup tab, select "Disable All", then click Apply and OK.

Reboot, then try the install.

Still no luck, hangs up on 98%.

Then through another remote access session, they tried the following.

They created a batch file called registry.bat which contained the following
Code:

Then ran that file as administrator.

Downloaded a file from Microsoft.com titled "subinacl.msi" installed it, created a command file called "reset.cmd" which contained the following
Code:
@echo off
title Resetting ACLs...
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
echo.
echo Resetting ACLs...
echo (this may take several minutes to complete)
echo.
echo ==========================================================================

echo.
echo.
echo ==========================================================================
echo.
echo FINISHED.
echo.
echo Press any key to exit . . .
pause >NUL
Ran that as administrator, let it run and finish up.

Ran msconfig again, turned off all services that were not Microsoft, shut down all Statup processes, then reboot.

After that I was told to try again, so I proceeded to try again. Still no luck, hangs up at 98% before reverting itself.

At this time, their hours of service are over, so I cannot contact them again.

End result is, I still have the problem, SP1 is not installed, and I have no anti-virus or firewall at the moment. But maybe those steps will work for someone else.

hmmmm sounds like you been having fun. Vista sp1 when it works corrupts some files after awhile so you often need to remove it then you cannot reinstall it. As regards microsoft support they took a month to help me update to vista sp1 and then i had to take it off. Just a tip if it does not work ignore the error messages and do a repair installation as shown in the tutorials it works but it is a pain as it has to reinstall all the updates. Also keep an eye on the updates that fail some of those are critical for vista sp1. Finally when you have sp1 on make the dvd as shown in the tutorials that way wont have to reinstall sp1 when it finds a way to muck itself up again.

Hi,

if you have the MS dvd making a slipstream SP1 version and installing using that is often a good idea.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151606-vista-sp1-slipstream-installation-dvd.html

Or you could try downloading the SP1 from MS site, instead of using the Windows update.
32bit

Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

64bit

Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone for x64-based Systems (KB936330)

If you are in the UK, there is currently a special Vista edition of Computeractive on the newsstands that comes with a dvd including SP1 not sure if it's both bit versions, tho.- if you have trouble with the download.

Hope that helps

Try installing the using sp1 stand alone installer from microsoft download center

or

you can order a replacement dvd with sp1 already on it if you have the retail version of vista. I decided to reinstall once i got the new dvd & my pc seems to like it better than installing from windows update.
