Cant open windows update

Strange thing has just happened today. I turned on my pc this morning and an update notification arrived in the taskbar. When I went to open it to find out what update they were it wouldn't open.

Since then I can't open the personalize option either by right clicking or through control panel. I can't open the welcome center, windows update, windows ultimate extras and the system options through control panel or the start menu.

All that happens when I click to open is a window opens then shuts really quick like it's loading, then dissapears.

I have done a system restore from the DVD media but it has not worked.

I'm confused now.

Hi,
Open the services.msc console (Start, then type in the search bar: services.msc and press Enter)
Search for those 2 services:
SLUNotify service
Software Licensing service

Are they running and set to automatic?

My Computer

I've got SL UI Notification service set to manual, and it is off, and software licensing is set to auto and is started.

OK. Set it to automatic and started it, then re-booted. Checked services again and it has stayed on automatic but the service status is showing as stopped.

n.b. I also can't access my network and sharing center from the taskbar or control panel either just found out.

I'm gonna start the SL UI Notification service manually and see what happens.

ok, started the service but still not able to open any of the windows mentioned.

I'm wondering whether Windows Live Mesh has anything to do with it. I got a tech preview from M/S on Tuesday. Installed it ok. Worked. Tried to un-install yesterday, but I still have the Live Mesh Remote desktop service active in the services list, even though I've un-installed and set it to disabled and stopped.

Might be just a coincidence. Any how i've made a list of the contol panel options that wont open.

1. Backup and Restore
2. Bitlocker
3. Default Programs
4. Ease of access center
5. Network & Sharing center
6. Parental Controls
7. Performance Info & Tools
8. Personalize
9. Power Options
10. Speech Recognition Options
11. System
12. User Accounts
13. Welcome Center
14. Windows Update

The ones highlighted in red are ones I know wont open with right click either, or from the start menu.

I'e just tried typing all the above services into the search bar as well and try running them from there. Still don't open

Humm, activation problem??
Try to start the service while in safe mode (F8 when booting)
Then reboot in normal mode and check if the service stopped again.

Ok, thanks for the help. Done as mentioned, and it hasn't had any effect on the problem, so i'll go ahead and post something on the MS forum link you provided.

Thanks for trying for me.

I was asked to look at a Windows Vista laptop computer where the Control Panel would not stay open. I also found that the Windows Update would not run. I tried two system restores which did not resolve the problem. I also tried restarting the License Service which did not work. I did find that Control Panel ran in Safe Mode.

I then went to Microsoft and downloaded the Vista SP1 and installed it. The problem was resolved by installing the Vista SP1.

If you already have Vista SP1 installed, try system restore prior to Vista SP1 and then go to Microsoft to download the Vista SP1 and reinstall.

I also ran AVG and Spybot and found nothing.

Hope this helps others having this problem, Frank

I had update problems (amongst others) with ZA Pro firewall. What didn't work was turning it off, I had to unintsall ZA Pro completely. Took me ages to figure this out, just a thought in case you have ZA installed. I now use Comodo and no problems!

I have SP1 slip streamed into my installation of Ultimate 64, so I cant really un-install, and I dont run a software firewall, so I know thats not the cause.

I have done a system restore to a point when I know it was all working, but to no good.

Any how thanks for your time in posting suggestions guys. I have looged a thread on the MS tech forums, but I have had no response from them what so ever yet. Extremely helpful bunch they are! lol

Hi, first I apologize for bumping a year old thread, but I thought it best to. I have the exact same problem that christof21 had/has. Has anyone found a solution, I've spent over 3 hours now googling for a solution. This is my first time using Vista, and that's only because it came on my new laptop. Not the best of luck with it so far, if I can't fix this, I'll definitely be going back to XP (I'd go to Ubuntu if Full Tilt Poker didn't run so glitchy in Wine).

Hi someusername. I just got an email notification about the thread I started, so I thought I'd reply.lol

Unfortunately, I never got the problem sorted out. I tried alsorts of stuff, from registry edits, to deleting the updates that had been done previously, but nothing worked.

In the end I just backed up my stuff, and re-installed XP Pro. I still have the same PC running XP, but have recently decided to move to the dark side and become an Apple b1tch. I know it's not the answer you were hoping for, but if the thread stays at or near the top of the list, hopefully someone will be able to help you.

Well I have Ubuntu dual booted now, but I'd like to keep Windows to play Full Tilt, and I'd like to be able to change settings. As it is right now, I can't even change my background. This is ridiculous, there should be a patch out by now. I tried installing Service Pack 2, it completes all 3 steps, then once it boots into Windows it says it failed, and it doesn't give an explanation. I can't believe how awful Microsoft is, I've found so many people with this problem, and it seems no one has been able to fix it.

I would reinstall Vista, but I wasn't given an installation disk with my laptop, so I'd have to bring it back to the store to reinstall my legal version. Vista truly is Windows Millennium 2. If I could get Full Tilt Poker working in Ubuntu without glitches, I would completely ditch Micro****'s Windows.
