hey,

I got vista home premium x86 and I like to upgrade it to x64. Is this possible without any cost or do you have to pay for it.
and can anyone tell how much it will be if you have to pay?

greets

If you have a Retail version and are in the US, Microsoft will send you a 64 bit DVD for something like $10 shipping and handling. If you have an OEM version, whether purchased or included with the PC you bought, then you have to buy a 64 bit copy.

Either way - You cannot "upgrade" a 32 bit installation to a 64 bit one. The kernel ("heart" as it were) is different. So either way, you will have to do a clean install.

Scotteq - I'm prepping for a new system that will be x64 from my current x86. How will data migration be? Are there any tips or tricks that you know of, or pitfalls I should be aware of? I plan on keeping my current hard drives, and installing on a new partition. Thanks in advance, and please point me in the right direction for any help in this matter that you or other forum members can.

Backup your data to an external drive. Remove all partitions. When you install x64, format just drive C: to start. In Vista x64, 40GB + RAM size for partition. I started with 56GB, I have 16GB of RAM. Once I did Vista x64 Ultimate SP1 and all the patches and service packs. I created E:. The paging file was moved to it by Vista.

32-bit apps should be installed in program files instead of program files (x86). Adobe Photoshop CS2 and above need Program files. It won't work in (x86).

Wrongo, I've got 32bit apps that include Microsoft Works 4.0, Fast Stone Capture, Aquazone Deluxe, EMusic's Download Manager and a bunch of other's that I can't remember at the moment, installed and running just fine in Program Files(X86). 32bit apps are installed by default to Program Files(X86), unless Adobe Photoshop CS2 is a 64bit program, it should be installed to Program Files(X86).

Actually, WildEagle, Photoshop CS2 and CS3 will not run correctly in Vista x64 when installed to Program Files (X86).

Actually, WildEagle, Photoshop CS2 and CS3 will not run correctly in Vista x64 when installed to Program Files (X86).

I'm not so sure of your answer. Sorry for interrupting but I have been using Photoshop CS3 and the rest of the Adobe CS3 Design Suite for over 6 months on Vista x64 Ultimate with no problem. I am a graphic designer so I use these program especially photoshop on a daily basis. And yes they are installed in the x86 folder by default. Just a heads up, ADOBE is not looking to upgrade any of their software to a 64bit anytime soon. They claim that having a 64bit version of Photoshop would have to be a completely separate binary from the 32-bit version. Which is not cost effective for them to build as most users are still on 32bit systems. A 64bit bit version of Photoshop will happen sooner or later in the future, but for the time being there should be no problem running CS3 on vista x64. As for CS2 I can't comment as I only have CS3.

Can you tell me what type of problem you have? Maybe I can help.

It is better to install 32-bit apps in a 32-bit program files folder instead of the 64-bit folder. Some apps can get flaky if not in program files folder. It is just a minor change that could help with problems in the future.

CS4 is 64-bit when its released.

I run a corporate network. Many of my corporate software and database vendors recommend installing to the program files folder over (x86). Personally, I just to keep 32-bit apps in Program Files and 64-bit in Program Files (x86). It takes seconds to do.

So, I should copy the contents of my current C: drive (x86) to a new folder/partition, then install x64, wiping the current OS, then move the x86 folders to the newly-created (x86) programs folder? Have I got that right? What of programs installed on other drives that are x86? Will they need to be moved to (x86) programs, or will they still operate in their current location? Thank you all for the discussion; it has been informative.

Just backup your data. You need to reinstall everything anyways. You don't want the backup on drive C:. You will need to remove drive C: and reinstall it from scratch. Put it on an external source or second hard drive.

Sorry, Drubei, I meant to say that SCSIRaidGURU said that it would not work - I have no experience with it myself, although it seems odd that a 32bit program would not work out of the Program Files (x86) folder....

Some programs have issues with it. So its easier just to avoid any possible issues.

Yes. I have ran into 7 programs that can't be installed in Program Files (x86) in the last few months. They can't handle the ( ) in the name. The database software vendors I use have told me not to install their databases on my new 64-bit HP Proliant server in (x86). It will cause serious issues with database corruption.

Ahhhhhhhh - ow it makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. I completely overlooked having the parentheses there as hosing programs especially those written in older development tools when parentheses were not allowable characters in the path.....
