| Vista Home Premium 32-bit & Vista Ultimate 64-bit both Service Pack 2 W7 Pro RTM 7600 32 & 64 | Re: Vista SP1 install failing again and again Hi Phil, So far, so good. I actually recommend that you install SP1 using the account that you created when first installing Vista (which is the way I did it); but the suggestion of MS to do this in safemode is logical, although I haven't tried it that way. To answer your other question about software and hardware - it is the responsibility of hardware and software vendors to ensure that their products are compatible with newer operating systems such as Vista, but since updates are usually free there is a limit as to how far they are prepared to go. Many vendors would prefer that you buy new products from them since that is the way that they make their money. Keep us posted on your progress and, hopefully, the outcome will be worth it in the end. Dwarf |

| vista home premium | Re: Vista SP1 install failing again and again LATEST on Tues 20th aug 2008 - Vista installed using the NEW product key given to me by MS support, which converts my old "upgrade" edition of Vista Home Premium into a "full" free-standing version. - SP1 and other updates installed successfully with no glitches. - PC now running fine. NOTE to anyone with windows vista service pack insatall problems... 1- BACK UP all your data first, in case installing Vista SP1 screws your operating system, as it did to me. 2- Use the MS helpline (it's free) and get a case reference from them, so when you call back they can help you quickly. Microsoft Contact Centre (UK): 0870 60 10 100 Microsoft Contact Centre (Republic of Ireland): 1 850 940940 3- Be persistent, and if they can't sort the prob after the first few calls, keep going back. I felt like giving up after six calls lasting over 8 hours total, BUT in the end they effectively upgraded my Vista to a free-standing version so it wuld work OK. Good luck all Phil |
