Re: Error 80240028 on update KB955428

It's fine now John thank you. It was the very first notification I got when you merged the threads lead to a "404-not found" page, but after that no problems.
I deleted my post where I had attempted, in vain, to upload the patch.

Re: Error 80240028 on update KB955428

SUCCESS
I had exactly the same problem re KB955428 (error code 8024002D)

using Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB955428)

Download KB955428_en-US.cab
save it then double click it to install
it doesn't show in view update history, but it does show in control panel - programs and features - installed updates
Updates then doesn't keep on trying to install it.

I hope this helps it worked for me

Re: Error 80240028 on update KB955428

Hi John,

Sorry didn't get the number as was copying the information from it as tried to install it and contacted Compaq and this is what they said:

Dear Debbie,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand from your email that you have an issue with Microsoft Works 8 update on Compaq Presario SR5249UK Desktop PC
Debbie, this issue could be due to corrupt or missing files of the Microsoft Works 8.
In order to isolate and resolve the issue I recommend you Uninstall and Reinstall the Microsoft Works 8 and perform the
update.
To uninstall the Microsoft Works 8 please follow the steps provided below :
1. From the Windows Vista desktop, click Start.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.

To reinstall the Microsoft Works 8 please follow the below steps:
1. From the Windows Vista desktop, click Start, All Programs, and then
PC Help & Tools.
2. Click Recovery Manager.
The Recovery Manager Welcome screen appears.
3. Click Next.
4. On the Software Program Re-installation screen select Yes, and then
click Next.
5. On the Welcome screen click Next.
6. Select the Microsoft Works 8 application from the list to reinstall.
NOTE: You may be advised to uninstall the software program that
was chosen to reinstall. If the a program to reinstall is
not listed, select The program is not in the list, and then
click Next. Helpful information will advise on how to
uninstall a program. If the program is in the list and has
already been uninstalled, skip this step. To uninstall a

First of, *thanks! You made a distinction in your error as it should be, and yet still managed to find the exact error and post under - Bravo!

@both of you:

Now, for the good news - you do, in essence, have the exact same error - OEM aside, you both have pre-installed Works on your computer with no CD / DVD to reference when the error pops up.

Bad news - you may have to wait a coupe of days until M$ gets this sorted out - or, you could try manually installing that one patch from Download details: Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB955428) to see if that resolves the issue.

Brit - that link doesn't open in Firefox browsers - I got the same error.

WARNING
Also, you cannot host files from M$ download. It is a violation of their policy.

Rip - try this link instead: Download details: Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB955428)

Finally, I merged these two threads as they are the exact same problem.

Tip
@SimReaper- when asking questions about errors, you need to note errors numbers and what it applies to - as in this case, the KB# - then you won't be making duplicate topics on the same error.
OK just did this and got same error message but am tempted to try the works 8.5 disk from my Toshiba laptop as when reinstalled it said it was actually Microsoft Works 8.5

I'd try the manual download first - it will save you a lot of time....

Thanks for your help

Try installing the update using this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=458985c3-9c6f-4049-81cd-0d0389c81f11&DisplayLang=en You'll have to right-click, go to Properties and unblock if you are using Vista with UAC. Unzip it to your desktop and double-click.
I don't know if there is a download option for your location.
I downloaded and installed "KB955428_en-US.cab", rebooted and in Vista, it is showing only in "Installed Updates" (not in "Update History").
In XP it just appeared in the list as usual.

Note: The installer gives the impression that nothing happened.....very annoying. You have to reboot to check whether or not it installed.

Re: Error 80240028 on update KB955428

Had same problem as Works8 came preinstalled on my HP media center pc. Went to Microsoft downloads, downloaded KB955428 cab extracted it and installed it. It shows in my installed updates and windows says that I am now up to date. But in history it shows that installation of KB955428 failed in two places, since I tried to install it twice from windows update. How do I take these references out of history?

You can't. That's history and like all history, it can't be altered. (Although many have tried...!)
