Hello everyone,

I'm brand new to the forum, and I've got a huge problem.

Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 fails to boot after the latest round of Windows updates.

Here is a list of the updates that I just applied:

Security Update (KB938464)
Security Update (KB954154)
Update for Microsoft Windows (KB954366)
Update for Microsoft Windows (KB955302)
Update for Microsoft Windows (KB905866)
2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Security Update Office 2007 (KB951596)
Security Update Office 2007 (KB951944)
Security Update Excel 2007 (KB951546)
Security Update PowerPoint 2007 (KB951338)
Security Update Publisher 2007 (KB950114)
Security Update Office 2007 (KB951808)
Security Update Office 2007 (KB954326)
Security Update Word 2007 (KB950113)
Security Update Outlook 2007 (KB946691)
Security Update Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB955443)

After restarting my system, everything seemed fine. I went under my desk to move some cables around, and then noticed that my PC had actually powered off by itself. Unfortunately this means that I was unable to see what the PC was doing prior to this.

I immediately turned the system back on, only to find that Vista displays the loading bar, followed by a black screen that doesn't go away. The only thing I can do at this point is to hit the reset switch.

Now, I've tried to repair my installation, but after inserting the Vista disc and allowing the Vista files to load, a similar thing happens! The blue/green Vista background is displayed and I can see a mouse cursor, but everything just stops here. There are no further prompts and I just sit there...fuming.

Before you ask, I already turned off System Restore after installing Vista the first time. *sob*

Everything was completely rock solid prior to this, so I think one of the updates broke my system. I'm guessing its one of the non-security, non-Office-related ones. I can boot into safe mode OK, but that's it. Vista refuses to start up normally. I cannot remove any updates from safe mode, either.

Can someone please help? I'm out of ideas!

UPDATE: I managed to uninstall the first five updates in safe mode:

Security Update (KB938464)
Security Update (KB954154)
Update for Microsoft Windows (KB954366)
Update for Microsoft Windows (KB955302)
Update for Microsoft Windows (KB905866)

However, the other updates seem to require Windows Installer, which cannot be started in safe mode. The problem still persists and I cannot boot into Vista normally. HELP!

It might not have anything to do with the updates.

Maybe, you had a dodgy power cable or it wasn't seated securely and that turned off the system while you were fiddling under your desk. If it powered off when Vista was applying the updates it could have caused a corrupt system file.

Btw, I have accidentally shut off the system by moving a cable - it can be done alarmingly easily.

If you have no restores / back up points and repair doesn't work I can only suggest a reformat and re-installation. But, hold on a bit as other forum users may have a better solution for you.

actually the same thing happened to me, I installed the updates posted on 9/9 and then my computer would not fully boot up vista. I also had the black screen with my mouse cursor in the middle before the computer would shut off and reboot. Had to roll back to an earlier restore point with the vista disk, Could not even start the computer in safe mode. I think it is the KB955302 update, going to wait for newer NVIDIA drivers before trying this again (have a BFG gtx 280).

Same happened to me! I went in safe mode, restore the previous situation and the computer worked fine again. Unfortunately, I switch it off and re-installed the updates again.... DAMMED!!!!!!!!!! I am still on safe mode...
