| Vista Ultimate 32 bit | Never Used Updates I mentioned in another post that I haven't used Windows Updates in two years and that it's not crazy. The vast variety of Updates issues revolve around obscure fixes that affect only a small fraction of users. This supposedly excludes some of the security fixes. Upon turning on updates, my machine was immediately infected with spyware. Some of us are not programmers and can't spend alot of time trying to make windows work. We could ask then after restoring our computers a half dozen times, why wasn't it infected before turning on updates?! My computer, with no spyware blocker and without a single update in two years, didn't not show a single instance of spyware previously. This seems to me to be a valid question. The better question is : Why is the functionality of my computer affected? You buy software and it comes out of a box. You don't expect it to change it's "charter" over the internet or while you are not watching so that you don't know from one moment to the next if it's secure or not. Rant over. |

| Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 | Re: Never Used Updates Chuckm07 I felt compelled to make a statement here - As stated in the other thread you posted – YOU have a problem NOT related to updates. I would advocate that it would be very fool hardy NOT to update Windows as security fixes and other important updates ensure the security, performance, and reliability of Windows. In my experience as well as countless others, those who choose not to update Windows are the ones who suffer the most with problems like spyware/malware, performance, and security issues. Your statement here: Quote: “My computer, with no spyware blocker and without a single update in two years, didn't not show a single instance of spyware previously.” Quote: “I had refrained from installing SP1 for Vista Ultimate on my machine although curiosity got the better of me when I finally installed SP1 and, as one might guess, my system was wiped.” Your problem is self created as you readily admit to not using a spyware blocker, nor doing updates for 2 years!!! I’m out – no need to argue here. Later |

| Vista Home Premium 32-bit & Vista Ultimate 64-bit both Service Pack 2 W7 Pro RTM 7600 32 & 64 | Re: Never Used Updates Hi chuckm07, It is extremely foolhardy to run an unpatched version of Vista (or indeed any other OS). I take that you do have some form of AV software and that you (hopefully) keep that updated? If so, I fail to see the difference between keeping that updated and keeping your OS updated. Failure to keep either, or indeed both, patched and updated is asking for trouble - BIG TIME. |

| Vista Business 32 | Re: Never Used Updates Ok, lost interest after reading a few written posts. So I will reply to the original question Answer is simple. The updates included defender update, which found the ad-wares with the new definitions. Simple as. Be happy the system still runs and the threats removed. Should have speeded it up too. |
