Error Code 80070490

I realise this is not a new problem, but, as I don't have a solution, maybe someone can help?

The last successful Windows update I've been able to download was on 23 Dec 2008. Since then everytime I try to download updates, either automatically or manually, I get Error Code 80070490 and a message that Windows can't download updates. I've read various threads and tried various fixes, but I think the only one that will work would be to reinstall Vista. Unfortunately, Vista Home Premium 32 bit came pre-installed on my laptop, so I don't have a Vista disk to use to do the reinstall.

Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this problem?

A: Your time and date settings are incorrect
B: there is a problem with either your network card, network cable, wireles connection or modem.

Check those out, very likely the issue lies there. I think it might just be time & date. Make sure you selected the right country etc as well.

Thanks for the response, but date and time are correct and all network aspects are working correctly, so I don't believe the problem lies there.

The various other threads on this problem all, eventually, seem to lead to the need to reinstall Vista, hence my question about how to do that if you don't have the original installation disk.

Any other thoughts would be most welcome.

Hmmm.. I seen this code before and recall fixing it when swapping my modem/router.
Though it can also be caused by missing a dll in the system32 such as vssapi.dll

vssapi.dll download - free dll files

But anyhow, regarding the install disc.

If you do not have one you will either need to buy one, or check with your PC manufacturor for a replacement one if under warranty.

Another option is borrowing the install disk from a mate.
As long as you have your own license the disk is all you need.

Thank you b12blib and prasathkumar for your advice, which I followed - I used an installation disk from a different PC, but used the Product Key for the problem machine. The Upgrade has worked so, hopefully, updates will also.

Thanks again for the help - much appreciated.
