Windows Update Does Not Work, Nor Can I Reinstall It!

Recently, my computer kept crashing due to memory issues. It caused corruption in a number of things on my computer, namely windows update and parts of my outlook pst file. I was able to fix my pst file with the inbox fixer which ships with outlook, but I am now having problems fixing windows update.

I am running Windows Vista 64-Bit with SP1.

When I try to run windows update:
It launches a window, but quickly disappears.
Also, when it appears on the recent programs list, it has the standard default application icon - not the windows update icon.

When I try to reinstall the Windows Update Agent, I get this error:
"Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error"

I know this is not a malware, spyware, virus, or trojan issue. As this issue started immediately after I had BSOD errors caused by my memory. This is a corruption issue.

I just need instructions on how to manually get to the point where I can run the Windows Update Agent Installer succesfully.

Can anyone assist?

Hi Ideric,

You could try a system restore to a point before the problem.

Seems you may have a number of issues and a Repair install may be the way to go. (Replaces the operating system files , hope fully without affecting your programs and data).

Hope it helps
