error code: 80040154 - Windows update fails

Hello experts,

I have ASUS Essentio mini-pc with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 installed.
I did run virus checker, spy checker, several registry cleaners.
I spent a week on it , as well Microsoft support logged in for an hour.
I did run the batch file re-registering DLL's.
The original error 80070424 is gone since I run the "ErrorFix" utility.

My recovery CD form the manufacturer is only to wipe out all what I have installed and reload the "vanilla" system. Windows repair option is not available.
This is for me out of question, to many programs are installed on my system.

Here is the problem I think:
Windows installer is missing,
Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable installation fails. error code 1603
"Windows update" does not work, error code: 80040154

Questions
1. Is there any way to restore the Windows Installer files ?
2. Upgrading to Windows Vista Ultimate version will fix the missing files ?

Any other suggestions?

TIA
Frank

Thanks Flavius for the tips. Followed up on it, no change.
Some correction to my original mail.
Windows installer file is NOT missing, it was just a hidden one.
I can install any software that does not require "Windows intaller / Windows update"
Error code: 80040154 or installer error 1605

Mcrosoft ran OneCare - no error.
If I buy and insall a higher version of Vista upgrade like Vista Ultimate , will this fix whatever is messed up?
TIA
Frank

Hi,

Its may be the problem with windows defender. Go to

Contol Panel -> Administration Tools -> Services -> Windows Defender, right-click, select properties, changed Automatic to Disabled

Let me know the status

Hello,
I disabled windows defender, rebooted - no change.
BTW I did run earlier windows defender - no error found.

New discovery:
Form elevated command ( admin ) prompt:
sfc /scannow - does not work !
Error : "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"
Bummer, new way to look at the Windows Update problem.

HI, I followed up on your links.

Imported the trustedinstaller.reg file successfully.
After reboot the Windows Modules Installer is still not on the service list.

The Windows Installer 4.5 failed, error message:
"The update does not apply to your system"
( Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu )

Thank you.

I am drag, I know, but still fighting against "clean reinstall ".

The C:\Windows\servicing directory I don't have TrustedInstaller.exe,
but I have two different places. Can I copy over ?
and here is a strange filename:
C:\Windows\servicing\en-US\TrustedInstaller.exe.mui

Other: I got the the Windows Vi$ta Ultimate upgrade CD, but does not allow me an upgrade only clean install. Yuk !

Error
"frontpage server extension" - I deleted Frontpage, still no good.
