Repeated failure to install MS Office 2007 updates (2). These are: Sec Update for MS Office Excel KB959997 & Sec Update for 2007 MS Office System KB960003.
Tried 5 times to install; always failed.

Have Vista Home Premium 32bit, SP1. Also tried turning off Norton 360 AV firewall, etc--no luck.

Help appreciated.

Pooch,
Yes; windows update notified me to install 2 updates mentioned back on 4/14. Just checked; Office 2007 is activated & tried to install updates again. No luck; no error codes posted. Have student version.

Have you got SP1 installed for Office? If not, download the stand alone pack, install, then try updates again. If you do have SP1 installed, download the updates seperately and try to install.

Also what errors are you getting? What's it saying?

You could try going to the Microsoft office site and downloading the updates the old way, I have heard that this sometimes works.

That's probably not going to work. They're still the same files. Been there done that.

I still think he needs to make sure he has all of the Windows updates, then try installing those two patches individually. And make sure the virus scanner is off.

It's all good  I understood where you were coming from; I just figured since it was the same file the issue would still be there. He should try it anyway, especially before more drastic measures, like uninstalling and reinstalling the office suite.

And it's aways good to have other options :)

Update. Called 866-727-2338, Microsoft Support; connected to Online help in India. Allowed remote control of PC to solve problem. Installed diagnostic s/w with fix.
Result: Support said that problem of installing upgrades should be fixed and installed successfully. Subsequent check showed upgrades for Office 2007 NOT installed. Perform update check with result that S/W removed them as critical updates for my OS (VISTA home premium, sp1).
Await new update cycle to see what impact to future upgrades is allowed.
thanks all for support.

This seems to be normal practice, They do it with the service packs as well. It would be interesting to hear how you get on though :)

I was just afflicted with this problem, and was able to recover. As a possible result of installing Windows hotfix? KB967756, Windows decided that the ownership of the C:\Windows\installer folder was wrong, and deleted it and all contents. I think the error code was 1028, didn't save it. The error had to do with the folder not being owned by either the system account, or the Administrators group.

That completely hosed all MSI installed application, including Office. No amount of Repair would fix that. What did recover it was the copy of my C drive that I keep on a USB backup drive (using xcopy backups). I just copied the contents of the installer back to where they belong, and the two Office updates then installed fine.

Now I'm not 100% sure that update KB967756 did the deed, but it was either that, or Windows Update itself.

Check your Windows installer folder, and see if it's empty.

Hi all,
Posting final to problem I had. I was finally able to install all the MS Office 2007 updates--a bunch of them.
Didn't use Windows Update which continued to be unsuccessful. Rather I went to Office 2007 website, got to list of Office 2007 updates, D/L each one, then individually installed. Laborious but successfull.

Still puzzled as to why these updates failed using Windows Update--but what works is the final criteria.

thanks all for help/suggestions.
