Windows Update Error 80070005 and 800F0203

Since I bought my computer (Sept. 07), Windows Update worked fine, until a few days ago. Now, when I try to download the two files I desperately need (sound drivers so that the sound works and graphic card drivers so that my screen can return to its default resolution) I get two errors: Error 80070005 and 800F0203. Well?

Edit: Just if anyone asks, I deleted AVG Free/Norton and turned off Windows Firewall. There's no AV software (that I know of) that could interfere with Windows Update.

Hi,
I hope al the 80070005 sufferrers are still reading this thread.
If disabling virus scan does not solve the problem then try the following.
The problem does have to do with corrupted permissions in the registry.
Here are the steps to follow:
In Scanning process, we can use Permission Reset Tool in TC.
1. Please download the subinacl.msi file from the following link and save the installation patch onto the Desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en#AffinityDownloads

2. Please go to the Desktop and double click the downloaded file.
3. Please select the C:\Windows\System32 folder as the Destination Folder during the installation. Later we will use this tool to reset the permission settings on the current machine.
4. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" bar, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
5. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

@echo off

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

@Echo =========================
@Echo Finished.
@Echo =========================
@pause

6. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "reset.bat" as the file name and choose "Desktop" from the left panel as the save location.
7. Refer to the Desktop and right click the reset.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator."
8. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished, you will be prompted with the message: "Finished, press any key to continue".

Note: About some driver update installation procedure, we also received this error code, please reroute this kind of case to Vista System Team, because, it may regard for third party programs structure.

Good luck!!!

and if that does not work try this.

1. Disable Windows Update
a. Click on start
b. Click on all programs
c. Click on accessories
d. Click on Run
e. Type services.msc and press ok
f. Right click on "Windows Update"
g. Click on stop (Windows Update is now disabled)
2. Rename Software Distribution folder
a. Navigate to: C:/Windows/
b. Find the folder named: “SoftwareDistribution”
c. Rename that folder to something like “SoftwareDistribution.old”
d. Create a new folder called “SoftwareDistribution”
3. Enable Windows Update
a. Click on start
b. Click on all programs
c. Click on accessories
d. Click on Run
e. Type services.msc and press ok
f. Right click on windows update
g. Click on start
If you are unable to find Software Distribution Folder, follow these
steps before #2 above.
1. From the explorer window press the Alt key to view the file menu.
2. Click Tools
3. Select Folder Options
4. Select the View tab
5. Select “Show hidden files and folders”
6. Remove the selection from “Hide protected operating system files”
7. Click OK

Restart your PC and you should be good to go!

Well, I managed to get the sound and video drivers working (by manual installing the sound drivers and using legacy video drivers), but there are two more updates on WinUpdate that still get 80070005. I tried the reset.bat and restarting the service, but those didn't work. And, some updates do work on Windows Update (I have 3 updates available: Office Live 4.1 worked, but HP w2207 Monitor and Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600 didn't). Well, at least I have the audio and default resolution back.
