.net 3.5 SP1 and IE8 updates fail to install

Hi all,

(Vista Ultimate SP1)

Tried twice now, and it goes through the whole update procedure, tells me it installed successfully, after a restart WU tells me it failed to install both .net 3.5 SP1 update and IE8.

It's also telling me I should install Vista SP2, but I don't want to do that until I figure out what's wrong with the first two items.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

TIA, --ch

Have you tried this, give it a go and post your results.

Hi,

Thanks for the info, in between time I managed to get the .Net update installed, trying that by itself without IE8. I will give IE8 one more shot, then I will try your method. I forgot to add in the 1st post that I'm running x64. --ch

Hi all,

This is not looking good .Navigate to Control Panel>>Programs and Features>>view installed updates and check Internet Explorer 8 is figured there or not -if yes but WU report failed install IE8 this would mean great trouble for you -of course in this situation uninstall IE8.

Well, it is odd to say the least. No, IE 8 is not listed as installed, neither in view installed updates nor anywhere else, and it is not installed as far as I can tell.

But... In programs and features, there is no listing *at all* for IE... in other words, the IE7 that I have on my computer is not registered as being installed. That despite the fact that the program is there and works...

Did the failed IE8 install remove the IE7 from the installed programs list? I never went and looked before, but I assume it was in there at one time... --ch

Yeah, that's what I did. So IE8 installed and works, but it gave me the message that it installed without updates (it says that it checks and downloads updates during the install). Help>about says I have version 8.0.6001.18783 (64 bit).

In Programs and Features, IE is *still not listed*... --ch

I'm sure you have it in Program and Features>>installed updates (attached image)

Yes, it is in there. So IE is not considered an "installed program" like for example Firefox? --ch
