Problem Windows update notification icon.

Hi,

I see an other post on my problem but it is more than 65 days ... I can't answer it.
So ...
I have selected to have Windows Update notify me before downloading any Windows Updates. I never see the Icon in the System Tray at all. The only time I see the Windows Update Icon is when I manually go to Windows Update and there is an update waiting to be downloaded. Any other time, the Icon does not show up. How or what can I do to have this Icon inform me that an Update is ready to be downloaded?

I have exactly the same problem, windows update notification icon never appears in the taskbar system tray, to alert me for new update available (important or not). I'm set to search new update and let me choose. The only time the icon appears is when it downloading new update because I do a manual check.

And an other problem with windows update, it never say me that SP2 is downloadable (never appears). I must go on microsoft download center and download it manually.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1,
Thanks,

Best regards.

Hello HeartOfLove,
Go to start - run -type in services.msc - scroll down to Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
The status should read Started.
The start up type should read Automatic.
Post back & tell us what yours says.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

So, Windows Update service and Background Intelligent Transfert Service are started and set to start up type automatic (Début différé=delayed ? I think in english, sorry I have a french version of vista).
But I do what you said and set the start up of the 2 services to automatic, and it doesn't change anything.

Best regards.

Hello again HeartOfLove
It may be that your windows system distribution folder is corrupted or the permissions have been changed. This is usually caused by malware or viruses.

What anti virus [ & other security programs] are you running?
Are they / can they be updated?
Have any "nasties" been detected when scanning?

Hi JMH,

Thanks for your reply :)
I run Spywareblaster + Spybot Search & Destroy + MalwareBytes' Anti-malware + Avast antivirus + Windows Vista firewall. They are all updated, and at least once a week. I can't do a scan now because I'm not at home, but I will try tomorrow and inform you for the result.
But 5-6 month ago, I have to change some permissions' folders on my PC for Lan and folders sharing. And the problem is that I don't remember since when the it appeared.

Best regards.

My Computer

I suggest you check for updates for your Avast, Malwarebytes & Spybot daily.
Scan for "nasties" a couple of times a week too.
Did your computer come preloaded with a different anti virus program?

[We will get back to your Windows update problem.:)]

Hi,

All my security software are in their latest version and latest definition's update.
So I found the time to scan my computer, and it found 1 spyware (Rogue.Installer).
The computer was disinfected, but I still have the same problem with windows update.
My computer come preloaded with Mcafee Internet Security trial (60 days), but I uninstall it completely.

Best regards.

HeartOfLove,
When you removed McAfee did you use their removal tool?

Now back to your original problem.
Is it worth while trying to System Restore to a date prior to your Update icon disappearing from the notification area?

I have read that this works in some cases -
Control Panel - Security - Windows Update
Open Window Update
Select Change Setting Option [left hand side, top]
Select Never Check for Updates Option
Wait for Window Notification Icon stating Windows Update has been disabled.
Repeat steps 1 & 2 above.
Choose Check for Updates but let me choose ...
The Windows Update Icon may reappear after it finishes checking for updates.

Hi JMH,

I use the function "uninstall" in the Programmes et fonctionnalités (Programs and functionalities ? In english version). And scan with CCleaner after.
Is it worth while trying to System Restore to a date prior to your Update icon disappearing from the notification area?
The most ancient date is 2009-08-15, and my problem was before this date.

It doesn't change anything.

Hi Flavius,

Thanks for your reply.

I did what you say and the result is :

L'espace de stockage WMI est cohérent (The space of stocking WMI is consistent ? In english version).

It doesn't change anything for windows update.
I start to read the link of JMH.

Best regards.

OK I'm beginning to run out of ideas. I hope Flavius returns. [He is an expert.;) ]

The only other thing that might work is what I mentioned in my post 2, ie
"It may be that your windows system distribution folder is corrupted or the permissions have been changed."

*** You should print a copy of these instructions before you start because you will need to restart your system a few times! ***

[Yes, you will be repeating a few steps that we did earlier. This time we will venture further.]

You may need a new "System Distribution" folder so it has the correct permissions.

Do the following while logged in as an administrator. If windows asks you for permission for any of these steps, you must allow windows to proceed by authorizing the change.

Click Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance, then (under Windows Update) > Turn automatic updating from “on” to “off”, then click “never check for updates”

Close Control Panel

REBOOT (Restart the system)

Go to My Computer: (Start > COMPUTER)

Click on C:

Open the “Windows” folder (You may need to authorize this)

Rename the Folder called “SoftwareDistribution” to “SoftwareDistributionOLD” (To rename the folder you right click and select the rename option.)

Create a new folder named “SoftwareDistribution” (To create a new folder go to Organize [top left hand corner] and select NEW FOLDER from the menu options)

Close all windows and any running programs.

REBOOT (restart the system)

Refer back to the first step where we turned off the automatic updates, then turn the Automatic Updates back “On”.
Close all windows and any running programs.

REBOOT (restart the system)

I think that covers it - & I hope that this solves your problem.

Hi JMH,

When you say "Close all windows and any running programs" do you want to say close all the programs in System Tray (bottom right), or close all applications or all processus or both, in Task Manager ?

I'm not at home tonight, I'll wait your answer and do it tomorrow.

Best regards.

Should be ok to ignore those in the notification area, bottom right of desktop. Close all open windows ie browser, email client, Word etc.
You can do what has to be done offline.

Well we tried to correct the problem. Unfortunately it hasn't worked out.
Unless someone else can come up with a bright idea you may have to contemplate the unthinkable - Format & reinstall Windows. [or continue updating manually.];)
Good luck.

Hi,

Ok JMH thank you for all :)

I haven't a original DVD of Vistax64, it's an OEM version, if I format & reinstall windows, it will reinstall all the softwares present with the OEM (like Mcafee, etc...) and I don't want this softwares.
Is there is a method to reinstall vista but not with all this softwares (with my OEM's reinstallation kit) ?

Best regards.

My Computer

You are very welcome. ;)
Re your new question about reinstalling I would suggest that you start a new thread under the appropriate section / heading.
