Ok so I use to be able to download and install some updates, but few would actually install. But now Windows Update can't even search for updates to install. I have tried manual installations from the Windows update site and that doesn't work either.

This is very frustrating to me because I can never install important updates on this computer, even when I freshly reinstall Windows, and I have done so sevreal times.

What MS say about this error:The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712"

Nothing to lose if also try this:The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712"
and this Fix for Vista SP1 install error 80073712 through windows update | Windows Reference

I found also sometimes help run checkdisk on startup -here you have tutorial how to do that http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html
You have to apply for all partitions

If nothing help and If you don't perform system restore try this:

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

sfc /scannow

when it will done create report

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

on your desktop appear file sfcdetails.txt

next run CheckSur Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate, and for Windows 7 Release Candidate
even if this tool won't resolve problem automatically it create logs:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

System also create logs -there is log C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log but this log is mostly too big
So download FireGenUL Altair Technologies Ltd.
place this file in C:\Windows\System32 and restart computer
next run cmd.exe and type

firegenul

Download also Process Monitor Process Monitor

run it and make log in *.PML format (File>>Save As) pack it and all logs upload on RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

because PM log will be too big to attache to post
