Win Update and stand alone update problems

Hi, I have a threefold problem. First, Windows6.0-KB917607-x86 does not install. No problems with administrator's pw. But after it runs comes back with the message "Some updates did not Install". No number or anything else.
Second, Win Update keeps giving me error 80070002. I have tried all the suggestions I found in the net, but nothing works. The problem is still there.
Thirdly, I tried to manually update IE7 to IE8 and also told me the same thing, it fails to update.
My vista is Home Premium SP2
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3400 @ 2.16GHz;
Total amount of system memory 3.00 GB RAM
System type 32-bit operating system
Number of processor cores 2
64-bit capable Yes
Graphics
Display adapter type Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Total available graphics memory 1292 MB
Dedicated graphics memory 32 MB
Dedicated system memory 96 MB
Shared system memory 1164 MB
Display adapter driver version 7.15.10.1599
Primary monitor resolution 1366x768
DirectX version DirectX 10

Can anyone help me to fix these problems? Thanks

A friend has Windows Vista x86 and keeps getting error 800F0900 when he tries to update. Looks like he is trying to update to Service Pack 2. I've searched for that error code, but can't find anything for it. Any idea what it could be? And how do I fix it for him. He has IE8 installed too.

Try also this How do I reset Windows Update components?

Remove also all *.xml files from C:\Windows\WinSxS folder, check also phrases in HKLM\Components image->http://www.vistax64.com/872713-post6.html
If you have any additional phrases in this apart PublisherPolicyChangeTime,StoreArchitecture,StoreFormatVersion you have to remove them

@LarryE
You should create another thread because your issue is completely different

Try this: How do I reset Windows Update components?

Try install SP2 in safe mode from Microsoft Download Center http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/229199-download-available-standalone-vista-sp2.html

if no help try this:

All steps make in normal mode:
Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

sfc /scannow

when it will done create report

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

on your desktop appear file sfcdetails.txt

next run CheckSur Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate, and for Windows 7 Release Candidate
even if this tool won't resolve problem automatically it create logs:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

System also create logs -there is log C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log but this log is mostly too big
So download FireGenUL Altair Technologies Ltd.
place this file in C:\Windows\System32 and restart computer
next run cmd.exe and type

firegenul

and then will create short *.htm report from WindowsUpdate.log placed in C:\Windows\System32 -report name FireGenUlReport.htm

All tree files:FiregenUlReport.htm,sfcdetails.txt and CheckSUR.log pack them and attache to post

Open elevated command prompt and type

regsvr32.dll msxml3.dll hit enter. You will get a prompt that the operation succeeded.

restart your computer. Try to update again :)

Thanks. I'll be going over this afternoon and will try out all the suggestions and get back with what, if anything, helped.

I really appreciate all the help I've received from everyone.

Have a great day.

To Frostmourne: First, thank you!
1.- It is a separate update, manual.
2.- I had seen that article before and followed the steps, but no results. I even couldn't install the System Update Readiness Tool manually.
3.- I had already tried to install ie8 manually and it did not install.
To Flavius: Thanks I will look into it.

I appreciate all your help, I will post the results. Thanks to all who replied.
