Vista Service Pack 2 corruptted OS - Fix

Automatic updates downloaded and installed Vista Service Pack 2.

On Restart, while updating the new files, files 1 & 2 loaded successfully.

File 3 of 3 caused a conflict.

What happens is the operating system startup files are seen loading line-by-line and in this case hangs up at PurblePlace.exe -- that's Purble, not Purple. It's a microsoft game.

All attempts to repair the problem or recover to an earlier time using the computer or the vista CD recovery disc failed to restore the system.

Called Microsoft 800-642-7676 and told them of the problem and they put me through to tech support - no charge.

After going through all the steps I already tried (multiple times), and 2 hours later, we used the Vista recovery disc to get a c:\ prompt and navagate to c:\program files\microsoft games\PurblePlace.exe

After deleting this file (del PurplePlace.exe), the problem was fixed. Apparently a conflict with Service Pack 2 and the PurblePlace.exe file.

The restart is not normal, showing the startup files loading again. The reason for this is that file "3 of 3" of Service Pack 2 did not complete. But this time all the files load. After the load, there are pauses and it takes a while, but eventually the login screen appears.

After entering the password, the screen appears to complete loading update file 3 of 3. That takes a while to complete, but eventually completes 100% and loads the desktop.

Loading the desktop takes a bit longer than usual with a different screen here and there, but eventually completes. Everything works.

A restart "just to make sure" and everything is normal.

Good Luck!
