Service Pack 2 causing preview problems

Basically every time I click any image on my computer to preview it in Windows Photo Gallery, it automatically shuts down and restarts explorer.exe and it started after I first updated to Service Pack 2 for x64 bit Vista.

Now these images open in QuickTime, Photoshop, and my IE and Firefox browsers so it's only the one application.

I usually try to research and fix my problems on my own since I'm the only one able to at home without resorting to paid services and I've tried System Restore which worked and Windows Photo Gallery/preview worked again but then I had to reinstall the service pack 2 again which let me pin point that it IS the update causing this issue.

I've looked all over online for a solution or maybe a patch that solves this. I've also contacted Microsoft(they've yet to reply from over a day ago) and sent the error reports from my control panel which had this:

I'm at a loss, what do I do? Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Use ShellExView ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows
to disable non-system extensions and then check results -problem will still exist or not.

I tried disabling a couple of them but nothing worked and I don't want to keep experimenting with it because I don't want to mess up my computer. Is there anything else I could try doing?

You can restore shell extensions without any problem by using this program as well.If disabling non-system shell don't help,run cmd.exe with admin previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin ) and type:

sfc /scannow

I scanned with system scan in cmd and it didn't come up with anything.

I also disabled all the non-system extensions and the only thing that changed was now I get

"Windows Host Process(Rundll32) has stopped working" which only seems to be because the extension: "Windows Photo Gallery Viewer Image Verbs" is disabled.

Otherwise disabling all the non-system extensions gets me the same explorer.exe crashing when I open up any image.

At some point you are going to have to start thinking about a re-pair install, or re-install. In the long run it might be easier and faster

If I put in the OS cds I have from HP and do a repair, will I still have all my videos, pics and word documents there when it's finished?

I hate to have to start over fresh just for not being able to use windows preview and what if for some reason let's say I do reinstall, it's the service pack 2 update that messed it up---what's to stop it from doing it again?

Also let's say I leave the Preview the way it is, is it going to cause problems in other applications eventually that it'd be vital to do a repair/reinstall?

Neverless I rather suspect any aplication which is not compatible with SP2 than inside system trouble.There is way to diagnose -rapair install always you can do if my method fail (if you get Vista Sp2 DVD).Remember to do repair install you need full Vista DVD with equal or higher SP than you have installed on disk -this means you need Vista Sp2 DVD or before repair install you have to uninstall service packs .This is really making unmess in system

As I said I suspect any application which is not compatible with Sp2.To diagnose I need log from *.exe and *.dll modules hanged to explorer.

1.Download Process Hacker https://www.ohloh.net/p/processhacker/download?package=Process+Hacker

2.Prepare classic log from PH :Hacker>>Save -save file as any name
3.Prepare log from *.dll modules hanged to explorer.exe:

-find explorer.exe process in PH,right click on it>>properties (images)


it open another window,navigate to modules tab right click there and choose "select all"


When you have all selected again right click and choose copy>>copy (image)


Now open notepad navigate to Edit tab choose "Paste",and save file as any name.

Both files this means classic PH log and log from modules attache to post
