Desktop files lost after update

Hi,
this is my first forum post, so apologies if I am in the wrong area. I recently followed windows update advice to install the latest patch for Adobe Acrobat. The installation failed and immediately afterward I noticed that all my word, pdf and image files that were on my desktop had disappeared, with the exception of two word files that I had open at the time. Searching for the missing files I managed to find shortcuts, but these stated that the files they referred to had been moved or changed and asked if I wished to delete the shortcut. I noticed that files not saved to the desktop were not affected. I have no idea what happened here, but unfortunately lost some important files. Any ideas? Any help appreciated, thanks,
Mike

Hi,
thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I have vista home edition, so it looks like I don't have access to that capability.

Whoops, I'm an idiot for not reading thoroughly! I downloaded shadowexplorer and was able to save my files. Thank you so much, this was a great help to me. Is there a way that I leave feedback to improve your rating on the forum, or is that automatic. Thanks again,
Mike

Windows did an auto update today and now I don't have any icons in the top bar of my Windows Mail. No Red X, no Send/Receive, etc. Do you think I should try that shadow thing or did Vista just decide I didn't need them anymore!

shadow thing? you could aways un-install the updates, see if it fixes it, then re-install one at a time until you find the one that did it

I found out how to get the extra icons back on my inbox. I was clicking on various toolbars and noticed one was not checked. I checked it and there was everything! Yaaaay! Now I have:
