Windows Vista Upadate for Microsoft Silvelight (KB979202) failed - Error Code

Hi,

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop. For last few days I have been trying to install 'Upadate for Microsoft Silvelight (KB979202)' without any luck. Each time, I get the error "WindowsUpdate_00000652" - Windows Update Encountered an unknown error. However, in between, another update (KB915597) has been installed successfully!

I tried to resolve this problem by wandering through different forums. However, no luck yet! Can anybody help me resolve this problem and get my Windows Installer back on track?

By the way, I did the following:

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type sfc /scannow

Following is the output I received -
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = == = = = = = = = = =
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc/scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

C:\Windows\system32>

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Does anyone have any idea of what's going wrong here? Do I have to fix the corruption to make this installation happen?

Please help me resolve this issue.

Thanks,
Shirish

We have people at the foum with expertise in this area and I am sure you will be visited soon. My only comment is, are you sure that this update is required? Second are you sure that you do not already have it?

Have you tried running it more than once, It might not be able to fix them all at once.

Thanks for your time and replies.

First of all, the windows installer says that this one is an important update. However, I don't know if I already have it. (I doubt that). Anyways, I have tried installing this one multiple times over the last couple of weeks and run into the error code 652 each time.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Shirish

I'm Sorry if I wasn't clearer or maybe I was, but I was talking about the sfc /scannow not being able to fix all at once. therefore it might need to be run more than once.

Thanks for your time and suggestion. When I tried to install the Windows Installer Clean-up Tool, I got an error message: "Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one. " !! :(

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Shirish

Hi,

Go to, download and install the Windows Installer Clean-up Tool from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe and remove Microsoft Silverlight if you cannot uninstall it normally. Then retry the update or download Silverlight from the Official Microsoft Silverlight site here: Get Started : The Official Microsoft Silverlight Site and click Windows Runtime on the right.

Flavius,

Thanks for your time and suggestion. I could not uninstall Silverlight as I got an error message: "Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one. " !! So, is this something like multiple installations happening at a time or an incomplete installation?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shirish

Make sure you don't have this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

if you have this key then delete it + restart computer,.and try again uninstall it.IF it don't help use Windows Installer Cleanup (see @Niemiro post).Because SFC command returned some errors, attache to post sfcdetails.txt and CheckSur.log files too.

Flavius,

I followed your advice. Following are the updates:

The specified H_KEY for 'install in progress' was not found. However, it was there before when I checked a few days back as advised by someone!

I tried to uninstall Silverlight once again. Windows Installer said: “No valid sequence could be found for the set of patches”. Further, my attempt to install Windows Installer Clean-up Tool, I got an error message: "Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one”.

Please find attached two files - CheckSur.log & sfcdetails.txt

Again, thanks for your time and help. I look forward to the solution!

Thanks,
Shirish

HKLM=HKEY_LOCALE_MACHINE

I did everything step by step per your advise. However, while downloading PSTools, I extracted all files instead of just psexec.exe file into C:\Windows\System32.
Later, my attempt to install Silverlight update ended in Error "Code 670: Windows Update encountered an unknown error." So, I ran Readiness Tool again. Please find attached the new CheckSur.log file.

Again, I appreciate your time, patience, and help.

Thanks,
Shirish

The corrupted keys in registry has been fixed but you still have the same problem with XPSViewer.Really did you reinstall XPS Essential Pack (XPS Viewer)?

Try below method

I attached to post files to replace for you.Of course you can replace them on allive system but you will have many obstacles with permissions to do that http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/112795-context-menu-take-ownership.html ,so thus I recommend to do that through Vista DVD or if you don't have Vista DVD you can special recovery disk instead http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html

1.Download attached to post FixPacks.zip file -in zip file is packed Packs folder -you have to unpack it and place directly on C: exactly as I show below:

2.Boot Vista DVD (if you don't have Vista DVD instead use special recovery disk )
Choose language>>Repair Computer>>WinRE>>command prompt

and type:

robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS

press ENTER,and next type:

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

press ENTER and next ype:

del C:\Windows\WinSxS\*.xml

and press ENTER

3.Run system normally and again repeat sfc /scannow command, and try install Silverlight

If still no result again run Readiness Tool and attache new CheckSur.log to post.

Just a quick question before I follow the suggested steps: Is booting vista DVD the same as formatting the computer? Will it affect the data on my computer? I have very important academic research data and some research-related one-time-installation softwares on my machine and I do not want to mess up with and lose those. So, I want to get your advise beforehand. Should I take a full back-up of my machine before following the suggested steps?

BTW, I don't know how important Silverlight is for my computer and I don't care if I don't have it on my machine. I just want the Windows Installer to be able to check for and install important updates on its own.

Thanks, again!

Of course not! Don't mistake with restoring factory settings from recovery partition in notebooks or recovery disk from notebooks. Please note also recovery disk from notebooks and Vista/Windows 7 recovery disk are completely different things! If you don't run special command to format/delete/reinstall OS yourself under Vista DVD,surly don't harm your system.More details about using Vista/Win 7 DVD

"robocopy" command only fill few files,it will not remove or touch other files I can sure you.

EDIT
On our forum is also good tutorial about using Vista DVD and WinRE
