We need some help with my wifes laptop if anybody could.

Windows update will not work and shows error 80070490.

We have tried system restore to no avail and just wondered if any of you good folk on here could help and come up with a solution.

Cheers Steve.

Hi Steve,

First run the System Update Readiness Tool. This usually takes 15-30 minutes to complete. See here, download it, and install it. Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

Once this has completed, download and install 7-Zip or be ready to use your normal tool to zip up files. Zip up the contents of the "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder", in .zip format (not .7z) Upload this zip archive here.

Test Windows update again.

If you want more suggestions, have a look at this webpage, but if you are not comfortable, just ignore this step. The most important steps are above. error 80070490 in Windows Update

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply.

As I am pretty new to all things computer related I am a bit confused with all this zip and normal tool malarky.

I think we may have to take it somewhere.

Cheers Steve.

Hello,

Sorry that I made it too complicated. I will included full instructions with pictures in all my future posts. Please don't take it anywhere until we have at least had a try.

Have you managed to install the System Update Readiness tool or not?

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for going that bit further for us. Its good of you. Pictures would be good:). Please dont take offence but my level at this is below numpty.

We downloaded this "All supported x64-based versions of Windows Vista" but on trying to run it a window appeared stating "the update does not apply to your system".

Thanks again Steve.

Hello again,

It sound like you need to download the more common x86 version. Here is the link to the x86 download: Download details: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) [January 2010]

Sorry to have to make you do another download. This install should be pretty easy. First, you run it. Then let it initalise. Once it has done this, you click OK the prompt, and let it run for 15-30 minutes. Then you click Finish.

Image showing initialising. Do nothing here:

At the end click Finish. There is nothing more to it.
