hi..
What you mean by update files.. are they windows update.. if you create a recovery cd.. it will have the same image of the laptop as it is now..
reinstalling a fresh OS you can still download standalone updates and reinstall them..

If I got it right.. lol
cheers

if you have the .exe files download before yes you can copy them.. but if those files had been installed through automatic updates no way you can get those out..

This is a guess, but a very logical one...
Backup this folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
It's where all the updates get downloaded to.
Unless the folders get different names on each Vista install, you should be able to reinstall Windows, restore that folder from backup, and update should work without downloading.

Anyone know why it wouldn't?

Perhaps other folders in "SoftwareDistribution" could be backed-up???

Anyone with a dial-up connection will be VERY grateful for any light you shed on this.

What about using Backup Cow?I think it is a good and easy way to backup and sync file between computers. It can automatically backup the newly updated files.
