When I try to install update "Synaptics - Input - Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad" it fails every time.

I have tried :- sfc/runnow

and going to:- start/computer/manage/services/applications/services. Locate Windows update service. Stop/start.

Neither worked.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is sfc/runnow, as far as I am aware it doesn't exist. Have you tried sfc /scannow?

Welcome

Agreed, it is not runnow, but scannow. The SFC command will check and repair corrupted files. It replaces the old files from its master copies. If it does not have a copy of the file that is damaged, it cannot be repaired. The next step, which is usually more efficient is a repair install.

My mistake, I should have said sfc/scannow. But when I did it did not scan. Something appeared on the screen for a second and then disappeared.

When I ran Window Updates today the optional update for Synaptics had disappeared. Would going to Windowes Update Service and stopping and starting, that I tried, have anything to do with it?

I have taken a copy of all the replies in case it happens again.

Many thanks to all who replied.

Not that I can think of. I do not know much about computers so I would not know.
As it was optional I think I can do without itl.

If you keyboard works as it is, then I doubt the update will be needed. I think that you can set it to hide that update by right clicking on it.

When you ran sfc /scannow did you run it as administrator, if not that is why it just flashed at you.

Hi Flavius,

Just found your reply.

I do not have the failed update now. But I did find on checking that in the "Uninstall or change program" there was an entry for Synaptic Pointing Device Driver/Synaptics Incorporated dated the day after the failed update. On looking at the update History, I found only one entry for that day which says "Update for Windows (KB970158) Important. Could they be connected?

I did not know about "MS Fix It" and have looked on line to find out about it. I have kept your reply in case something similar happens again.

Many thanks,

Daisymay

Hard to say they are connected or not

look at these links:What is the Windows Update delivered under id KB970158? Is it malware?

KMDF Kernel-Mode Driver Framework for Driver Developers

Hi Flavius,

Checked the web.

The only answer I could find was "It is not a virus"

It is "Microsoft Kernel-Mode Driver Framework Ins"

As the update that failed was optional, and the installed program for Synaptic Pointing Driver was dated after the failed date, it looks like to me that it sorted itself out. (wishful thinking?)

Thank you again for the trouble you have taken.
