I do not have a repair disc, it did not come with my computer.
I apologize from the start, I am Very computer illiterate.

I cannot install any windows updates, it says windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. I have looked at this and it says it is started.
I have a red x over connection icon and it says connection status unknown class not registered.
Cannot install avg or any other virus protection, avg gets right to the end and says Installation failed
Local machine: install actions planned Installation:
Error: MSVC Redistributables installation failed. Installation of AVG can not continue.

Still some things I try, like adobe updates etc, to install says
The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the windows installer is not correctly installed.

I thought it was a virus and had someone helping me with that. I followed their instructions to remove any virus or maleware. I have ran a lot of virus scanners with no avail. We could not find a solution. They are not an expert in this type of technical issue, so I am trying the Vista Forums for this. This is what I have tried so far.

Malwarebytes, OTL, ComboFix, VirScan.org, System File Checker (SFC.exe) sfc /scannow, SystemLook.exe, Kaspersky online antivirus scan, Vista Automatic Repair, chkdsk /f, VRT Tool by Kaspersky, fix.reg, WUS Fix.exe,

I went here "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed" error message when installing application and it says this about the installer error
This behavior can occur when either of the following conditions exist:
In the DCOM permissions, the default authentication level is set to None, and the default Impersonation level is set to Anonymous.
The system account does not have Full permissions on a folder or registry key that the Windows Installer is trying to access. This is NTFS-specific.

I went to avg forums and found this,
Error: MSVC Redistributables installation failed. Installation of AVG can not continue.
Error: MSVC Redistributables installer requires immediate restart. Installation of AVG can not continue.

=> This issue is related to the Microsoft Visual C++ libraries installation in your Windows operating system.
More information at Knowledge Base 2667 MSVC Redistributables installation error

AVG9 needs "Visual Basic C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributables (x86 or 32 bit)" to be properly installed. If not, AVG is trying to install it during installation, which could lead to mentioned error in rare situations.

I cannot do a system restore, it shows nothing to restore back to. It is not showing any installed windows updates at all. I also do not have any sound now.

I get a lot of errors that say service dependencies, interface class not registered.

I ran a program called regGenie and it said that I have 1,035 errors.

category
Uninstall entries 87
com active x entries 5
application paths 6
file path references 88
invalid class keys 21
empty registry keys 806
file associations 13

I don't know if I should click fix or not.

On another forum, there is another user that is having the exact same problem and nobody will respond to theirs or mine for technical advise in this area. The only thing we have done in common is use the free version of revo uninstaller recently.

Any help appreciated, thanks

Hello,

I think that your computer is in such a mess that a complete reinstall will be the only solution, but I am willing to try and fix the issue first. Be aware that this issue is so bad that the chances are that at one point I will just have to say that I have no more ideas, it is almost certainly unfixable, and I will help you re-install. Or, we could just re-install now.

STEP ONE:

Please try posts two and four here: Network and Sharing Center: network unknown and class not registered

STEP TWO:

"Go to Start>>Search>>services.msc
and check below services exist, have correct settings and are working

BITS: Automatic(Delayed),started

Windows Update: Automatic(Delayed),started

Windows Modules Installer: Manual

If you have another settings you have to correct it. If you can't correct settings or any service don't exist follow below."

Please tell me what the settings are for these, for example BITS might be stopped, and generate error 1 if started.

Credit for above to Flavius.

Thanks!

Okay, step one post 1 reregistered regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
successfully.

I tried the fixing common sound problems link but it gave me this error.

fix it troubleshooting cannot continue because and error occurred,

the diagnostic solution encountered a runtime error.

I uninstalled and reinstalled sound driver package with no avail. Still no sound.

When I tried to unzip the driver package, I had to go and change the permissions to unzip it. Do you think the comp has changed all of the permissions.

step two

Windows Update is set to automatic delayed, started

Windows Installer is set to manual

I do no have a BITS option in that page to go to.

Thanks for your help.

I read in another thread to try this, what do you think, could it be all registry problems,

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-insta...ows-installer-service-vista-all-versions.html

I tried this but when it opened up it opened as adobe photoshop, I have them on a notepad but dont know what to do with them now

I don't know if this helps you but when I run sfc/scannow it says this

Hello,

Thanks for all that. I think your issue is more serious than that threads, but I am very willing to give it a try, it will do no harm, and may fix one of your issues. I forgot to mention, I would personally not use regGenie, as Registry Fixers are renowned for causing more problems, not solving problems, and having phoney speed increase percentages, but I understand the need to try anything at this point.

Just one confirmation, you ran ComboFix and the such under the guidance of a helper, you told you that you were not infected, and so send you elsewhere to get help with this, as Malware Removal Experts are renowned for knowing nothing about the technical problems once a machine is cleaned. Admittedly, I am getting to a Senior point in the training to be one, but that probably doesn't inspire confidence! Also, your internet was broken before ComboFix, as ComboFix can do this, and the fix is very different.

STEP ONE:

Please follow Methods I, II, and III (1-3) from this tutorial. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/258674-background-inteligence-transfer-service-fix.html

This was written by a native Polish speaker, so if you have any problems understanding him, I will re-write it for you.

STEP TWO:

I also think I see a trend in the errors that is one that I can fix. I think you are missing some of the Visual C++ Runtime libraries. Please download and install, in order, the following. If it asks for a restart, say no, but restart on the last one no matter what, ie restarting between each one is unnecessary, as long as you restart on the last one. The last two install much quicker, you will be pleased to hear.

Download details: Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)

Download details: Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

Download details: Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)

Download details: Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

STEP THREE:

Please download and run, or install respectively, these two files:

Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

STEP FOUR:

Allow me to find out just how much corruption SFC has found up until this point:

Please press the Windows Key, and while still holding it down, the R Key. Go past any UAC prompts if necessary to access the Run Command. Type findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press enter, and either upload, or open, copy and paste in, the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop.I know there is a lot there to do, take your time, and don't worry about speedy replies, I won't disappear!

Thanks!

Richard

Backround Intelligent Transfer Service was set to automatic, i reset to Automatic (delayed start). It said it was stopped, I started it and an error popped up
Windows could not start te Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local Computer

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Method 1
Downloaded and tried to run the BITS repair and it said

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) repair is not required currently

Find more info on the bits repair tool at An update is available to fix a Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) crash on a Windows Vista-based computer

Method 2

Said the same thing when I pressed run. Could not do default or aggressive mode.

Method 3

I think I need some step by step help with this one.

Method 4

I don't have any ativirus installed, When I started with the maleware, I uninstall avg and then I could not install anything again

Method 5
I have microsoft firewall and went into control panel,, windows firewall and checked the eception tab to allow

I went to the bits in system and tried to start it again and get the error

1068 the dependency service or group failed to start.

Thanks for your help!!!!

I am on to step two with fixing the errors.......

My Computer

This is wonderful work! Please continue on with steps 2, 3 and 4 as you are. Don't worry about Method 3. I am currently going to miss out on this, as I have seen the possible root cause, and this will not help that. If I feel the need to come back to Method 3 later, I will give you instructions, but at the moment, your Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start. has given me a lead that needs following.I need you to do the following. I repeat, I am only missing out on this because there is no need for it at the moment, as BITS itself is working, something else is not, and so BITS does not need fixing.

Go back into Services, as you did for BITS, and please report the status (eg Started (Automatic)) for the following services. If one is stopped, please try to start it, and if that fails, please tell me the error message and number. At least one will fail.

COM+ Event System
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
DCOM Server Process Launcher

Thanks!

COM+Event System... startup type, automatic

it was stopped, I hit start and the error popped up

The COM+Event System service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Service name RpcSs
Startup type says automatic but is grey and will not let you change type.

Saying service status started, again start stop pause, and resume are grey and will not let you click them to change.

The RpcLocator startup type says manual and the service status is stopped, I did not start this yet it is still stopped, waiting for your instructions on this one, just saw it and looked at it.

DCOM Server Process Launcher

startup type automatic
service status started
again type and status options are grey and will not let you change them.

On all of these when I click on dependencies there is nothing in the boxes and I get an error box with big red x in it and says Interface: Class not registered. I am getting that class not registered in a lot of places.

My Computer

Step Two

I tried to install the downloads you told me but when it starts to install it gives me the error

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

I have had this computer since December 2009 and it has just in the past month given me problems. I did use the Revo free uninstaller to uninstall a bunch of games the grands put on here. Do you think that did something to the comp? I have already deleted the Revo uninstaller, it seems the problems did start to escalate after that.

Step three

Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

The same thing happens, it prepares to install then up the error box comes

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

It extracts the files, then I get an error
Windows Update Installer Fatal Error
Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error.

Step four I put as instructed into run command and when I press enter a black screen pops up and instantly disappears.

Seems like the windows installer service is not going to let me install anything.

I need to think about this. This is really serious, and, unfortunately, I think it is unfixable, and a re-install is required. I am just giving it a go so that we know we have tried everything. This appears to be massive file system, and registry damage, maybe by a dying hard disk, or other.

I will provide better instructions tomorrow, when I am less busy.

The COM+ service is broken.
The greyed out buttons are correct, and normal.
The class not registered is bad.
The two RPCs are good.
The DCOM is good

Conclusion, it is the COM+ service that is the root cause and needs fixing, plus Class not Registered, and the rest.

Please move onto steps three and four.

It could have been caused by Revo, it has been known to cause damage, but I highly doubt that it caused damage this bad, though I don't recommend it.

We will check the hard disk tomorrow, as I am just too busy tonight.

No problem Richard, whenever you get time is fine, I have been working on this for three weeks now so a few more days is not a problem, Will an upgrade to Windows 7 help fix any of these if it is not the hard drive, or would I need to buy the whole operating system and do a complete install for windows 7 to fix these. No need to answer these questions today, whenever you get time.

Thanks a bunch

I wonder if this would help

Hello,

Flavius is helping you with the COM+ problem, and he is far better than me at most of this stuff anyway, but I will do what I can.

If you purchase an Upgrade copy of Windows 7, you can either Upgrade or Clean Install. I don't think that an upgrade alone will fix all of these issues, as it usually causes many issues on a fully working PC. What I am saying is that if your computer did not come with recovery CDs, it should have a Recovery Console that we can Clean Install Vista with for free. If you choose to upgrade to Windows 7 (and don't do this because of this issue, only if you want to upgrade) then a cheaper Upgrade disk will suffice.

I think the next thing to do is to check your Hard Disk Drive. Please download and install Seatools for Windows, and run a SMART check (probably no available) the two Short Check, and one of the longer checks, and see if you get any fails. | Seagate

Can you also run from the Run Command cmd and press enter, and then in Command Prompt chkdsk /f /r and restart your computer if asked. Your computer will perform chkdsk before startup for approx. 20mins - 1 hour, so please make sure you run it when you are happy not to be on the computer. You can use your computer during Seatools.

Thanks!

Richard

P.S. Can you please tell me how old your computer is in years, the manufacturer, and have you had any luck with the SFC report?

Thank you both,

It just has internet settings under current version. It does not have Svchost anywhere under that

I am not sure what you mean in the second part of your post, I ran downloaded regbak, but I have no idea what or how you want me to change .rar or .7z. Sorry can I get a little more step by step.

My Computer

thanks again

chkdsk/f/r ran after a start up, it ended with window has completed the scan. How do you know what it did? Or if it did anything?

My laptop is an acer aspire, and it is 18 months old.

Hello again,

I am sorry, I bring bad news. The situation is 10 times worse than I thought. You do have massive registry damage. To show you what I mean, here is a screenshot of what that CurrentVersion key should look like. I think your entire registry is like that, and is completely irreparable.

CV.JPG

I would like to get that disk check done if I can, but first we need to talk.

Modern computers (such as yours) that do not come with re-installation disks, but instead have the disk build onto the hard disk in "Recovery Partitions". When we run this, the computer will be returned to as it was when it left the factory. Everything (every document, song, program, and saved game) will be deleted, and so beforehand, we need to back it all up. We will guide you through all the backing up, so that you still have all of your documents, we will guide you though the re-install, and we will get you back up and running afterwards, and help you solve any problems, and re-import all of your data.

We will be here for you every step of the way, and I truly think that there is no other way. I have a few questions for you. Are you willing to do this? It will require you to re-install all of your programs, and set up your computer from scratch again. I do not deny that it is not a lot of work. Are you willing to do this with us?

Do you have your data backed up, and do you have anywhere to back it up. If you are only trying to back up documents, and stuff like that, then a cheap ($10/£10) memory stick from Tesco/WalMart will do. Before you go out and buy, however, we need to know what you would want to back up (do you have a huge music library) and then we will show you how to buy a big memory stick, unless you already have one.

I am sorry that it has come to this, but if you still want us to try to fix, then we will, but I don't think we have the slightest hope in heck.

Richard

okay richard, I do not have a lot to back up, Can I put it on dvds, pictures, recipes, bookmarks etc, I do have wildblue as my internet, but that should not be a problem should it? I have a few programs on here, but I have the disc to put them back on. No problem in downloading the browsers firefox and chrome. I guess mainly the family pics and a few personal items is all. Thanks for all of your help. It will be nice I think to have it restored back to new. I thought I had to have a disc that came with the computer. I did not know I could do this. I will start saving the things I want tonight if I can put them on dvds. That is all I have here right now. Thanks again.

Okay I have copied the files I need. I am ready when you are.

I really appreciate this Richard, whenever you are ready, I guess I am willing to put this back to factory settings.

Thanks again

Hello again,

I am very sorry for my late reply. Things got a bit hectic, but have settled down now. I was doing a medium lenght drive yesterday, and the weather was horrific, and it was just queue after queue, accident after accident, cars in ditches galore, and motorways closed for hours on end. It was only a 900km drive (we sometimes do far more) and we got stuck behind 9 closed motorways from multiple motorway pileups. Our average motorway speed was a tiny 30mph! Horrific!

Anyway!

Have you managed to back everything up? Have you managed to back up your bookmarks. If possible, I would recommend spot checking your backup media (ideally on another computer) to make sure you have copied the file, and not just shortcuts to them. If it took a while to copy, however, you should be fine.

We may be able to get your other laptop going, but we will deal with that as a separate issue at the end.

Thanks!

Richard
