Solved Update error 80070490

Hi everyone my first post:)

I getting the error 80070490 and I tried system restore but one luck.

I found this Windows Update error 80070490 on the MS site and have tried the System Update Readiness Tool but again no luck :(

My next step would be the upgrade on the link using a system DVD and there lies my problem, I don't have one!

I have a Acer Aspire 6930Z laptop and as with most laptop these days you don't get a Windows disc.

I can make a Acer recovery disc but I'm pretty sure that will only do a full reinstall !

Any ideas would be appreciated

You have damages in key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Package,possible there are more of them only Readiness Tool can't detect all at once.Apart issues with Windows Updates surly many componets (or maybe all) cannot enable/disable in "Turn Windows Features On or Off"
In CBS log there are not additional important errors.

I have a Acer Aspire 6930Z laptop and as with most laptop these days you don't get a Windows disc.
That bad for you.In place upgrade in 100% guarantee to solve problem, but unfortuanately you cannot apply this.I could try to fix your system but I can't promise this will work -it dependce how many additional hidden damages you have.

If you decide to rescue your system then follow below:

1.Download & run RegBak tool Acelogix Software - Freeware
this tool will create registry files copy - For me important are files SOFTWARE and COMPONENTS
2.Run cmd.exe and type:

cd /d C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages

press ENTER

dir /s >%userprofile%\Desktop\log1.txt

press ENTER

cd /d C:\Windows\WinSxS

press ENTER

dir /s >%userprofile%\Desktop\log2.txt

press ENTER

all four files:SOFTWARE,COMPONENTS,log1,log2 pack to *.rar or *.7z and upload on RapidShare AG, Cham, Switzerland or MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
Link to uploaded files give me on PM.

That doesn't sound good :(

I'm a little confused

Could I not use the Acer recovery on the hard drive?

The fix 1 and 2 what does that do to the system or is this just to copy files so you can try a fix them?

This will make fresh reinstall if you want...

These are not fixes. These steps only create list of folders/files which I need to analize your system if you decide to rescue it of course

My Computer

OK lets try the fix if your happy to help.

I've downloaded RegBak and made a copy of the Reg

Also done the log files and will hopefully PM you soon :)

You have errors in many subkeys HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages

almost all errors are empty subkey owners e.g

error

(f) CBS Registry Error 0x80070103 Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.0.6000.16386 failed to get owner for package.
This error means you have empty key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~en-US~6.0.6000.16386\Owners

I compared your registry with other systems and I figured that for many subkeys in Packages key you don't have Owners subkeys -for many ,many subkeys:shock:.That strange but Readiness Tool doesn't report this as error in it's log - but you have also note this tool is not perfect. But of course not all components require Owners subkey too...

Readiness Tool report it's neccessary to fill missing string for only one components

(f) CBS Registry Error 0x80070002 Microsoft-Windows-HomePremiumEdition~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.6000.16386 failed to get CurrentState
(f) CBS Registry Error 0x80070002 Microsoft-Windows-HomePremiumEdition~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.6000.16386 failed to get Visibility
(f)
Checking your list of components in Packages and in WinSxS seems you don't have any corruptions

I'll prepared for you special fix for registry. This will do exactly what Readiness Tool request -this will remove all empty Owners subkeys in these components and fix the one component.I give you 50% chance this will work - maybe SP2 accept this update state if readiness Tool doesn't report as errors...

Importing this fix is difficult -there are many obstacles in permissions,to do that on allive system you need to change permissions for 23 keys :sleepy:...thus I decided on easier method -I already imported fix to your registry file (exactly I changed only your SOFTWARE file),so you need only replace SOFTWARE file by using liveCD linux e.g Ubuntu (there is no way to do that on allive system) -details on PMhttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/159360-trustedinstaller-restore-owner.html

:) A very big thank you to Flavius :)

My system is working OK now. It has SP2 installed and has done 17 updates with no problems

Many Thanks........What a great forum!

Hi Ashg,

You received exceptional support here and I don't think many but Flavius could have done for you what was done without resorting to a more drastic solution such as a re-installation. I'm pretty good, but I'm not in that league (and very few here are). I hope you have clicked on the middle button to the upper right of his last post to you to thank him with rep and with whatever you want to add as comments as his efforts and success here are as deserving as any I've ever seen.

I am going to request that the thread be marked solved so that anyone with a similar problem will know that this thread contains a solution and to prevent others who may want to help from wasting time on an issue that's already been resolved.

And yes, it is a great forum - probably the best of its kind for Vista and related issues (and I've been to many and participated in some). Make sure you bookmark the site so you don't lose it and have it available if you have any other questions or problems - no matter how simple or basic. It may be someone besides Flavius who responds, but you will still get the best help we can provide and that will probably be better than you'll get anywhere else (and it's free!).

In the meantime, you may want to check out the Tutorials section where there are many articles on how to do all sorts of things which you may find educational and perhaps even useful. I've made many changes to my system after reading some of them and seeing how they could improve things for me. They are MUCH easier in general than what you just went through - some can be a little complicated but most are straightforward and the intructions are so well written that even the complex ones are made to seem simple.

Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks I've added a comment as you suggested :).

I'm a Moderator on a car related forum and have recommended this site there

I've built a few PC's in my time and have a little knowledge but nothing like this.

This has saved me from a reinstall and I'm very grateful .
