windows and Norton firewalls, a speedtouch router

You should never have more than one firewall running at one time. They can conflict, and actually REDUCE your protection level. I would very strongly recommend that you disable one of those two firewalls. That is your choice. Both are perfectly fine. If you choose Norton, you will have to follow the instructions in the link for it. If you choose the Windows Firewall, disable Norton, and in theory at least, your updates should work immediately.

Thanks!

Richard

P.S. Which one did you choose?

i have tried this before...
i even tried to disable both of them but still i couldnt download any updates :/

um i choosed norton firewall :)

My Computer

That is fine! You only have 8 updates showing. Have the rest succeeded, or have they suddenly stopped working? Also, did you choose to add the addresses to Norton, or the ports. And when they were both disabled, it still did not work. This could imply that it was not the firewall.

There is another thing to try:

Open an elevated Command Prompt: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181765-elevated-command-prompt.html

Type exactly:
netsh winhttp reset proxy

and press enter.

Retry your updates. If there are still issues, run the following Microsoft FIXIT in AGRESSIVE mode: How do I reset Windows Update components?

Run the following tool: Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

Retry Windows Updates.

If there is still an issue, can you please tell me whether the same issue happens to other computers in the house? Thanks so much!

Richard

from before the updating didnt have this issue,, i've only noticed that a few weeks ago...
um no actually i didnt add them to norton... i didnt know how :S
um ya maybe, but what else could be the prob!?

i tried the elevated command prompt thing + disabling both firewalls again... what i got is that some of the updates only succeeded but not the rest :S thats a pic of what i got after the updating :
http://www.vistax64.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21521&stc=1&d=1291286773

so then i went for the How do I reset Windows Update components?
but when i reached step 6 in the "let me fix it my self" i had a prob... the 3rd, 4th, & 5th reg. dll files are not working and brings up this message when i enter them into the cmd :
http://www.vistax64.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21522&stc=1&d=1291286773
so i didnt go further and left the cmd open and came here to tell u what happened :S

My Computer

Don't worry too much about the manual method. Just run the FIX IT in AGGRESSIVE mode to save time. However, it has worked out reasonably nicely, what with your excellent descriptions. :)

What version of Norton do you have? Is it Norton Internet Security 2009/2010, or Norton 360 3.0/4.0

I shall then tell you exactly how to add an exception! Thanks!

Open a new elevated Command Prompt, and type this: regsvr32.exe shdocvw.dll

Can you please absolutely confirm that the message is the same. If it is, you don't have to include another screenshot.

Right, please run steps 1, 2A, 3 (about 15 minutes), 4, 5, and then Step 1 from the top yellow box, but only follow this last one if Integrity Violations were found. Please upload the new sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop. System Files - SFC Command

Thanks!

P.S. Good luck!

Once you have done that, please follow the instructions here: Windows Update error 80244022

You only need the numbered and distinct instructions at the bottom, to do with Internet Explorer. All of these errors point to something in a network, which is why we are persevering with these network fixing steps.

Thanks!

i went to the link and downloaded the Fix WU and opened it and the fix went successfully... but then when i retried the updating i still got the same failure message

i have Norton Internet Security 2010 :)

um when i opened the elevated command prompt and typed regsvr32.exe shdocvw.dll ... i got this message:
http://www.vistax64.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21524&stc=1&d=1291296084

um actually the error message for the updating is still the same except that this time there is only the first error code (80072EFE)

sfcdetails.txt is attached!

but my error code is different (80072EFE)... should i still do whats told there?

My Computer

Right, SFC only report "corruptions" from your theme, nothing else. There is no reason why your theme should be causeing a problem, so there is absolutetly no need to remove it, my only worry is that SFC might have "fixed it". Hopefully not. If it has, I am really, really sorry.

Basically the issue is that there is some unwanted internet setting somewhere. This setting is messing everything up. We are resetting various things, so that eventually we reset the area where that setting is, removing it, and then all of a sudden, everything should work again. Please bear with me, and try this link: Windows Update error 80244022

Just the bottom section.

If this does not work, I will have a manual look for the setting. Please follow the entirety of this thread: http://www.vistax64.com/network-sharing/284688-network-posting-tips.html in particular, making sure to run the batch file at the end.

Thanks!

Richard

Hello!

We will get there (hopefully!) Just give the BITS fix one more try please? It is working for me. Sometimes computers do glitch, and the Internet is a big one. A retry might just fix it.

Also, can you just confirm that after all that updates are still not working?

Thanks!

Richard
