Hello and welcome to the Vista Forums!!

I see your error there. It is two very small corruptions.

WARNING! This fix has been made specifically for this user! If you are not this user, DO NOT run this fix, as you could seriously harm your computer. Take a few seconds extra to make a new thread, and get a fix created for you, rather than having to possibly reinstall your whole system!

@mwmit: Ignore the above :)

Download the attached registry file, import it, and re-try your Windows Updates. If Windows Update still does not work, please re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, and attach a new CheckSUR.log.

Thanks!

Richard

Hello again!

I can see that it has not imported properly. However, first, you have exported the wrong key.

You exported:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Package_1_for_KB971961~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0

Package_1_for_KB971961~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0

You should have exported:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Package_for_KB971961_ie8_0~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1

Package_for_KB971961_ie8_0~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1

Can you please navigate to the correct key, and see if you can create two new DWORDS:

"CurrentState"=dword:00000007
"Visibility"=dword:00000002

This will look like 7 for CurrentState and 2 for Visibility. After that, please export the key, just to confirm that they have been created properly. If it goes perfectly, can you please re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, retry Windows Update, and include your new CheckSUR.log.

If it still doesn't work, there are two more methods, the second of which is guaranteed to work, but is a massive pain.

Thanks!

Richard

Hi Richard & thanks again for your help!

I went to the correct registry area and the current state and visibilty fields already existed. If I tried to modify them I received access is denied. Itried to change permissions and was again denied. So I took ownership and then could give administrators & system full control and trusted installer already had full control. Then I modified the entries as you stated. Here is the export:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Package_1_for_KB971961~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1]

"InstallLocation"="\\\\?\\C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution\\Download\\88872dbd6d2e0f081f296cb12d4e8b05\\"
"CurrentState"=dword:00000007
"SelfUpdate"=dword:00000000
"Visibility"=dword:00000002
"LastProgressState"=dword:00000003
"LastError"=dword:000f0801
"Trusted"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Package_1_for_KB971961~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1\Owners]
"Package_for_KB971961_ie8_0~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1"=dword:00030004

I tried windows update again - still same error. Ran SUR tool still same error. and also tried the reset tool in agressive mode and still the same error.

Thanks,

Hello again!

:confused: Ummmm.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Package_1_for_KB971961~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~8.0.1.1]

You have exported the wrong key again. How about exporting the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages key for me, right clicking on the resulting .reg file > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and uploading that here.

Then I can look more closely at any other possible causes, before embarking on one of the fixing methods.

Thanks!

Richard

Thank you for your patience Richard. I apologize for my carelessness exporting the incorrect keys. Once I found the correct key in the registry and changed the owner to administrators and gave full control to administrators and system I was able to import the registry file you provided for me. I was then able to perform updates!!

Do you have any idea why I had to change the owner and permissions on these registry keys? Is it a Vista thing? I have never come across an XP registry key that I did not have permission to change.

Thanks Again!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello!

I am really glad that the problem is now resolved! It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you! I am glad that the fix worked. Often it does not, as I believe that your you can also be a truncation for the entire key missing in certain circumstances, and then we require a second fix.

Ownership and permissions were completely redone in Vista, and remain true for Seven. You will now regularly have problems with permissions for both files and registry keys in V/W7. However, this is there for your safety. So yes, back in the days of the insecure XP, this wouldn't have been a problem. Just for your information, the other two fixes involve launching regedit as the root system (:p) or providing me with your software sub hive file, have me modify it, and copy it back via bootable CD.

Anyway, have a really great day!

Richard

I'm having the same problem (80070490), but I seldom fiddle around the regedit, so are there any users out there, who might lend me a hand?
I see that niemiro has been banned, so I guess he can't offer his help anymore :(
