Hey all,

I'm having problems installing the NET framework 4.0 update. Every time my windows update tries to install the update, it fails to do so and tells me it hass encountered an error. Error code 643. Googled everything, been round forums, but cannot find a solution.

I've tried using microsoftfix it tool for this update, doesn't work.

Tried uninstalling previous net framework version 3.5 and reinstalling, no luck.

Can anyone help?

Many Thanks

Not sure what you had tried.

Have you tried this tutorial from Microsoft Support ?

If no luck with the tutorial above, consider asking this question at :

Hi there, thanks for the speedy replies.

Unfortunatly I;ve tried the solutions from the forums even before posting here and I;ve just tried them again, no suck luck in installing the update and my NOD32 is fuming...saying that "maximum protection may not be ensured". I;ve decided to show you the exact error message I keep getting:

Hope this information helps

P.s I've cleared my temp folder and reinstalled the netframework versions up to 3.5 but when I try installing version 4 I still get the aformentioned error in installation. It gets stuck halfway and fails to install.

Many thanks

Hey, found a solution to this error, simply just keep trying till it works. I left the installation of NEt 4.0 for a while and it just installed itself sucessfully.

As for the ssolutions you found Kesume, the page was great, but the software I downloaded just told me of the problems I already knew, and to fix them I;d have to fork out £70....in my opinion I've already paid for the OS therefore support for any dodgy update should be free irregardless of whether it's from microsoft or someone else.

Anyhoo, it's safe to say this topic can be closed. Thanks for all the help guys!

Re: KB 2446708 failing to install. Tried to install several times with no success. Went to Control Panel> programs and features> framework 4 client profile> uninstall. The dialogue box gives you a choice of repair or uninstall. Chose repair. It took quite a while and thought it had hung half way thru but it completed ok. Reinstalled KB 2446708 and again it also appeared to hang midway but it completed successfully. Hope this helps

My other reply wasn't clear what I was replying to. I tried the reinstall of the framework 4 and it appears the problem is now corrected. I'm unclear why we have to research this problem that Microsoft appears to have created, but in any case, it appears corrected now.

Hi zaniac625.. if the extra updates are not causing any problems it may be best to leave them be. Another option if like me you find the problem an irritation is to uninstall them one by one and see what happens if anything. Another option would be to do a system restore to before this pesky KB first came on the scene. (Each update downloaded from Windows creates its own restore point so it shouldn't be difficult to go back to pre KB2446708.) Before trying to install it again try repairing the Net framework 4 client profile as per my previous post. Warning this could turn out to be painful if it doesn't do the trick!! Remember the old adage "If it ain't (currently) broke don't fix it!!"

Many thanks Longvale for the prompt answer and sound advice about leaving well alone. I tried a system restore beforehand but when I tried to update the same fault suddenly appeared. Thanks - I will let things rest
