Windows update crashs.

Recently The windows update engine quit working. You click the icon in the system tray and it states Explorer Error and a close button. Any attempt to restart update dose nothing and it doesn't matter if its from a system tray icon or menu selection. I have been looking for solutions to what may have caused this behavior.

My system is relatively up to date and the last report form the windows update said it only optional updates. The only other software updates that went through were AVG and it was an upgrade from 8 to 11 and nvidia video drivers.

Is there a way to clean up windows update to work again? Any help would be appreciative.

@richc46: I had found that thread shortly after the post and it worked like a charm. It cleaned up the mess that was there it appears.

The box I run vista 64 on is a custom box that has been running stable for years. Amd 64 dual core, with 4gb. Multi use box. I am a software developer and was at a loss until found the above mentioned thread.

I did experience a rough update a few weeks back. No blue screens and the system appeared to hang. It took two restarts and a reset to previous update setting to clear it out and windows update appeared to work, until I updated avg. Everything appears to be working now.

Thank you for the help.

Just a tip for next group of updates....
1. Download all the small ones first
2. Then download the larger files last and separately!

This method has worked for me over the years...:D
