Windows Live Essentials 2011 update issues

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and it is 64 bit. I have been trying to install an update titled "Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419)" since 19/10/2010 when it was released but I have been unable to, because as soon as I try to do the update I get the message "Error(s) found: Code 800401E4. Windows Update encountered an unknown error".

I have been searching for a solution to this error for months by trawling through other discussions online but have found nothing of use. I really want to get rid of this annoying message. Other updates that have come after this do not work either ("Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista for x64-based systems", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175)", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467174)").

Something else of note is that there is also an optional update entitled "Realtek driver update for Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" that will not update either. In any combination of these updates (either both or either one of them selected) the update does not work and the same error message is given.

I was suggested to uninstall Windows Live and reinstall, but this brought to light a different problem: the "Uninstall" feature of the control panel does not appear to be working as whenever I try to click on ANYTHING on that list (be it Windows Live or Service Pack 2 itself) it claims that the programme has already been uninstalled. (see image attached).

Please help with this annoyance. I will provide any further information you need.

From your original first post, there was a " an error occurred ..." message when you tried to uninstall. It also asked if you want to remove it from the list.
Did you click " yes " ?
If yes you did, was the WLEssentials name still on the list afterwards ?
If no you did not, why not ?

Adding :

excerpt : Minimum requirements for installing WLEssentils 2011

To successfully install the new Windows Live Essentials 2011, it requires the following:

Operating system: 32- and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 with the Platform Update for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 with Service Pack 2 and the Platform Update for Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2.

Ok I did that and I have attached the SFC file that was created. The sections of the document listed with corrupt files that it could not repair are as follows:

  • Cannot repair member file [l:20{10}]"tcpmon.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Printing-StandardPortMonitor-TCPMonINI, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch
  • Cannot repair member file [l:20{10}]"tcpmon.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Printing-StandardPortMonitor-TCPMonINI, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch
  • This component was referenced by [l:164{82}]"Package_30_for_KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.18000.936330-185_neutral_GDR"
  • Could not reproject corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:46{23}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32"\[l:20{10}]"tcpmon.ini"; source file in store is also corrupted

Does any of this mean anything to anyone? I am unsure of what to do now to try to fix this.
