Vista SP1 corrupted install

Basically, I updated an old computer running Vista to SP 1. When I rebooted, I got the infamous black screen of death. I've gone through the advice here:
Your computer may freeze or restart to a black screen that has a "0xc0000034" error message after you install Service Pack 1 on Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2
but at the end I get a message that "Microsoft VBScript runtime error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'Microsoft.XMLDOM'.
I'm running as admin, and I'm really not sure of what to do at this point. Thanks in advance.

I see, well that's not quite the problem I'm having. I'm having the problem that link I posted specifies, where it reboots and says something like "doing operation 169/65535" and locks up somewhere.

The link I posted specifies the problem I'm having, and then what I wrote is what is happening now. Thanks.
