Can't Boot After Win Update

I am helping a friend repair her Toshiba Satellite laptop running on Vista home 32 bit. It was working well until after instaling a Windows update. Upon reboot the screen said installing update 3 of 3 - 0% do not turn off you computer. After 0% showed for a few minutes the computer turns off and this becomes an endless cycle and the computer keeps rebooting with the same message never succeeding to install the update.

I tried booting into CD using Farstone disk check (basically the same as microsoft diskcheck) and ran diskcheck on the C and D drive a few times without scan for bad sectors checked and also ran once on he C drive with scanning for bad sectore. Now upon trying to boot into windows after a very long time I just get a blank black screen and am able to see and move the mouse and cant get into windows so am forced to power off.

I tried using F8 to booting into the Repair options and used startup repair which failed. I also tried system restore from the two available restote points but this also failed. What happens if I select the option "restoring the complete Windows operating system"? Will this format the drive and cause a loss of data?

It would be great if I could recover Windows as it was which I would prefer, but if not I will need to find a way to back up the data and reinstall windows.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

Thanks for the suggestion Rich. Is this the link to the ubundu CD you are referring to?

Download | Ubuntu

Do you know if I will be able to complete the restore with the trial or will I need to purchase the full version?

Kind Regards

Chris

Seems to be a good link, but mine tells how its done.
You should have what is called a restore partition. You shoiuld be able to complete the install without the CD, but cant be sure, and dont know if partition is not corrupt.
