Updates fail, System Repair fails, System Restore won't work

Hi, my name is Stormy, I'm new to this forum since I really haven't had any issues in the past.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my desktop. I restarted it a few days ago to install SP1, it rebooted and started installing 3 updates. Once it reached 100% it kicked into System Repair. After running through it, it restarted and did the same thing. Now 3 days later, it's still in that process where it installs updates, goes to system repair, restarts and starts again.

I tried interrupting it and doing a System Restore, but even at the earliest date on it, it goes right back to that repetitive process. Now I can't get to any of my files or anything else on there. I'm stuck, and I need some help please!

No I can't. Tried a lot to get there, the only thing I can go to is the "Repair Your Computer" selection from the F8 screen, and I can access the Command Prompt from there. I've tried doing a System Restore from here, but it doesn't have a date to go back to without throwing me back into the loop.

Hi,

Do you have a boot CD or Floppy that will get to DOS prompt?

No, but I can get to it from the Repair Your Computer options. The only issue I don't understand is, comes up listed as
X:\
instead of
C:\
is this an issue?

My Computer

Hi,

No that is the "Made up" drive letter for the CD.

At the prompt type this: -

CD C:
CD Windows
CD SoftwareDistribution
DEL /F /S /Q Download

That should delete the updates which are trying to install & get you back into the system

Then you need to reboot as normal.

Post back when you have completed it or hit a problem. OK?

Hello again, you mentioned in another thread , that i was working with you on, that you had your OEM or Install dvd's in storage. Have you thought of retrieving them yet ? Just a thought, in case this stuff we are suggesting to you does not work .

I'm trying the other avenues first, as I'm not really sure where the discs are in storage, and I'm not sure when I can find the time to go look for them.

Hi,

OK, let startup repair do it's bit now & you should get your system back?

If that fails, boot into safe mode & then restart as normal.
