Uninstalling Vista Service Pack Frozen

I need to uninstall the service pack to perform an upgrade install since a virus corrupted my windows files, but it's stuck at 41% of Stage 1 (of 3). What should I do with this? Hold the power button for 5 seconds? Let it sit here forever just in case it budges? It sounds like it's working hard accessing the hard drive, but after an hour of only 41% progress, one tends to be a bit skeptical.

Yes, those are the steps I'm following... :D My problem is not so much how to uninstall service pack 1, but what to do when it freezes part of the way through. Would it damage the system if I did a hard power off? Should I let it go indefinitely?

Actually, eventually the system rebooted itself and finished the uninstall. However, I had to go back into the programs section of control panel and uninstall service pack again. After having done that, it got stuck with a registry key on the window during reboot and now it's just a blank screen. I can't see anything at all, not even the boot screen. What's a person to do?

This is what I would try if I could not boot

If you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options
Create Recovery DVD.
Hard Disc Controller must be set to IDE in BIOS and Bios must be set to boot from the CD Boot Priority - Change

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.
System Recovery Options. Choose an option tht will not cause you to lose your stuff.

If Vista will not start now, boot the Recovery CD to run Startup Repair which automates System Restore as well as numerous other tests including System File Checker which can repair system files which are not corrupted beyond repair.

If Vista still will not start, try booting into Safe Mode to run sfc /scannow to repair System files.

Below is a bulletin distributed by MS to explain the start up procedure when Windows will not boot.
  • Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair is located on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If your computer has preinstalled recovery options, it might also be stored on your computer's hard disk. For more information, see Startup Repair: frequently asked questions and What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista? If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.
  • Change restart settings in safe mode. If your computer is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and then fails again repeatedly, restart your computer in safe mode and select the Disable automatic restart on system failure checkbox. For more information, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
  • Reinstall. If no other options have solved the problem, and you are sure that your computer's hardware is functioning normally, you might need to reinstall Windows. A custom (clean) installation of Windows will permanently delete all of the files on your computer and reinstall Windows, so only use this option if all other recovery options have been unsuccessful. After the installation, you will need to reinstall your programs and restore your files from backup copies. For more information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows**.

Those seem like good suggestions, and ones which I would definitely follow. However, what I mean is that I can't even see the screen while bios is loading. Basically, the nanosecond I turn it on, it's black. The lights are all on, the hard drive light and the WiFi light included. I can tell you pressing caps lock doesn't turn on the caps light, but that's all the symptoms I've got. Never seen this before, because even in the event of a failed mother board I've at least been able to see a bios screen. Basically, it's a whiskey tango foxtrot type of situation.

If you follow the instructions that I have given you and the result is a black screen, it sounds like a hardware problem. Lets find out for sure load this Ubuntu and if you cant post back cause it is a hardware problem and we can give you information
Try to load this and save your stuff if you can. If you cant load this post back

Couldn't run Ubuntu from disk. Ran a thorough hardware scan and turned up no errors. So I've decided that I'm just going remove the hard drive from the machine and use my nifty little usb device to connect it to another computer, image the entire disk, and reinstall windows on that machine. Thanks to all who tried to help, but I'm done messing around with this. But one thing I got out of this was the Ubuntu installation disk. I had no idea you can run an OS without an install.

Glad you have sorted out what you want to do, I myself, would just do as you are doing, I hate messing around and trying this and that to fix an issue. If the hardware is good , then just reinstall , best bet. Good luck, holler if you need any tips .
