I can't get this wretched machine to download SP2. I used FixIt to gain some ground. After running FixIt, the install of SP2 started but now it only goes to 50% installation and cites Error code 80070490. Without installing SP2, I can't update to IE 9 and therefore can't see some websites properly etc etc etc. It's making my life miserable. Someone please help!

I used the first link on this updates forum and downloaded the standalone. The install starts and then does not complete. Same error except it says 0x80070490.

The Hotfix KB947821 completes 75% and appears to still be running, but doesn't finish.

If you have a restore point dated before all this started available, you could also try a system restore using that restore point to hopefully fix it.

The SP2 has been failing to install since 7/2011, but I never realized that it was the reason why I couldn't update IE.
The Hotfix worked eventually. But the SP2 still doesn't install. Now in the Windows Update it runs through the full green bar, but still says install failed. I'm just going to keep running the standalone SP2 until someone comes up with something that works for me or it magically completes itself too.

It wouldn't hurt to see if using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to reset and re-register Windows Update may help.

Option Two didn't work. According to the advice from Windows Help, if KB947821 doesn't work I should reboot the Windows CD and repair Windows. Problem is, I don't have the Windows Vista CD.
