3 updates keep failing

Hi
We recently (5 days ago) HAD to reinstall/reset this computer.
In short, we started experiencing blue screens and other significant problems and then lost the ability to access the internet. It was decided to reset (or what ever it is called) the computer to its original delivery configuration and then reload everything that we added after we purchased the computer.
All went well, we didn't experience any problems with the reload and product keys/codes worked well (even Vista didn't complain when it was upgraded to Ultimate), and we installed Bitdefender Total Security 2012.
We now have an update problem, there are three (3) updates that repeatedly fail. Other Updates have and are working (including Optional), we have tried restarting the computer, updating without any other software running, automatic updates and manually selecting the updates, but no success so far!
The problem Updates are;
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2378111) Download size: 12,0 MB
Update for Windows Vista (KB970430) Download size: 1,3 MB
Update for Windows Vista (KB972145) Download size: 13,7 MB

P.s. I don't know if this is relevant but Trusted Installer is now consuming over 50% (sometimes 90%) of the cpu.

Pp.s. The Windows Update page "Error(s) found:" message is "Code 8024200D Windows encountered an unknown error".

Regards;
Fred.

Try disabling all anti-malware programs.

Hi again, thanks for the replys.
So, Townsbg, I nervously disabled the Bitdefender suite and retried the update process (we only run Bitdefender because it doesn't play well with others). Unfortunately we had the same outcome. I can add that the three Updates in question do appear to download, it looks like the failure occurs to all three during the installation of the third update. So I tried sequentially loading one update at a time and they each failed, I am confused
richc46, you said, "If the problem turns out not to be a virus or malware..." How do I know if it is a virus or malware?
We haven’t had a blue screen since the reinstall and I believe the blue screens were caused by Ad-Aware competing with Avira Premium which was then uninstalled. We intended to change from Avira to Bitdefender and went to load and run a scan with the free Ad-Aware, we ended up accidentally loading a free trial of Ad-Aware pro and thought, well let’s give it a go. Unfortunately it clashed with Avira (I think) and when we tried to remove Ad-Aware a lot of processes got stuffed up (including internet access) and 4 days later we reinstalled the computer.
Regards

You will know that it is not malware, by making a scan with your anti virus and downloading and making a scan with malwarebytes. If you cannot, run scans due to your problem, follow the instuctions given by Townsbg and post the information that I suggested.
