SP2 will not install on my computer

When I attempt to download windows service pack 2, the installation is fine, but at the very end, my computer checks to make sure it has installed, and a message pops up saying sp2 did not install.

Also, I know sometimes security software is a problem with blocking Sp's, would Norton 360 pose a problem?

Thank you.

Hello Nicole,

In addition to Rich's excellent post, I would like you to try disabling Norton. If you don't know how to do this then don't hesitate to say so and we'll guide you through it.

I would also like you to run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) (by Microsoft). This will give me a better idea of what's going on :)

SURT download link: Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista for x64-based systems (KB947821) [May 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Download and install that. When it finishes, it will generate a log file which I would like to see. The log can be found in the following location:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Double click on it to open it, then copy and paste the contents into your next post for me please :)

Don't delete the SURT installer after you've used it as we might need it again and it's quite a big file :)

Tom

I did all three troubleshooting steps advised by the website, but none of them helped, not even disabling Norton. For each step I still was shown the same error message. The only step I have not tried was uninstalling Norton, which I'm not sure if it will help since the disabling step did not work.

Hi Nicole,

I think you've missed a bit off the bottom of that log, would you mind retrying it please? It might be an error with the SURT though, so don't be concerned if it's the same :) Whilst you're at it, could you give me this log please:

Export CBS.log

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer
  2. Double click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder, and then inside that folder, the CBS folder
  4. Right-click on the CBS.log file, and select Copy. It may show as just CBS (without the .log extension). Do not be concerned, and proceed to copy the file.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a file on your Desktop called CBS(.log)
  6. Right-click on this file again, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder
  7. Another new file, also called CBS, but this time with a different icon, will be created. Please upload this new file to the forum, here

The reason could be that the hardware of your laptop is not supporting SP2. At the time when your computer prepares registry settings after installation, the pop up shows SP2 is not installed.
