Windows Updates Wont Download

Closed by request
I have 13 windows updates that fail everytime I try to download them, I dont know if this is related but I also cant install any applications that I download. The error I get says code 641, code 80070641 and code 8004ff01. I also cannot open Windows Live Movie Maker but can open Windows Movie Maker (if that clarifies the problem at all).

I have Windows Vista Home Premium, use System Mechanic and Microsoft Security Essentials. I know nothing else about my operating system or how to post my log files etc. If you need me to post or tell you anything about my operating system, please tell me how to do it because I have no idea how to!

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have tried using Mirosoft Fix-It and now there are 18 updates that wont load. I looked at the System Restore but it doesnt go back far enough to before there was a problem, and I dont know how to find the problems and stop system mechanic.

My Computer

Open System Mechanic and look to see if it has a restore button or some means of reversing the previous operation(s). Registry cleaners are a bad idea as they are pretty-well guaranteed to delete something important and cause headaches down the line. Windows has its own cleanup tools and they are all you need.
The other thing to try is a System File Check see this tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html?ltr=S
There is also a chance of infection here of course so download the FREE version of Malwarebytes, update and run a full scan. Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer - make sure it's the free version and not the trial of the Pro.
If it wont install in regular mode, try "Safe Mode with Networking" reached by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up. It will also update & scan in that mode.

In order to receive some updates from Microsoft you have to be pretty-well up to date. When you open Windows Update does it say that you are using Microsoft Update? See the picture below for what I mean and if not click Change Settings over at the left to make it so. It may involve installing a small update. Click the picture to enlarge if necessary and take no notice of the Ultimate Extras, I have Vista Ultimate so those only come with that.

SP2 stands for Service Pack 2 and you can check if you have it. Look for the 'Computer' item either on your desktop or in the Start Menu (Click the Start button over at the bottom left) and locate it, then right-click on it and select 'Properties'. That will tell you exactly what you have installed. Please post back what it says.

While you're in the Start Menu you might as well check this too, open Internet Explorer and click 'Help" then click 'About Internet Explorer' and tell what that says. This is irrespective of whether or not you have another browser as your choice.

Yes it is service pack 2

It says 'You recieve updates for Windows and othe products from Microsoft Update'.

When I open Internet Explorer I see no help meu.

My Computer

When trying to uninstall a programme I never use anymore I got this error message

The windows installer service cannot be accessed. This can occur if the windows installer is not correctly installed.

My Computer

That's good it's service pack 2, and the Microsoft Update is on OK, thank you. When you open IE right-click on the top bar and you should see a drop-down menu, check the Menu bar item and then you should be able to see Help and consequently About.

Now regarding the problems getting updates, if you are satisfied it's not malware then click that link to Microsoft I gave in my first response and you can contact them for help with any update issues.

You should not that some updates offered are occasionally cancelled as not necessary. That could be what's happening here, although it's usually only 1 or 2 at a time.

Sorry your response overlapped with my post above.

Run the System File Checker (SFC /scannow) as I suggested a few posts back. I gave the link to the tutorial.

This is why I am so set against registry cleaners as this is a shining example of how they screw up a system.

To get help removing a particular program Google their website help section.

I have tried running malwarebytes and every time it gets to 20 minutes in on full scan, it crashes and says not responding and never responds again. When I ran the quick scan I got this message;

Registry Data Items Detected: 2
HKCR\scrfile\shell\open\command| (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE %1) Good: ("%1" /S) -> No action taken.
HKCR\regfile\shell\open\command| (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE %1) Good: (regedit.exe "%1") -> No action taken.

What do I do now? Do I click on remove selected?

Internet explorer says version 9.0.8112.16421, update versions 9.0.8(kb2719177, cipher strength 256 bit.

sfc /verifyonly says windows resource protection found integrity violations.

sfc /scannow says windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Well if it were me I would format and reinstall Windows from scratch, which actually I just did last weekend. But to do that you have to have the system DVD, preferebly with SP2 included. Do you have that, or at least a recovery option maybe provided by the PC supplier in a hidden partition?

Malwarebytes crashing is unusual, you could try it in Safe Mode.

I dont believe that I have a disc, no.

I wouldnt know where to look for a recovery option.

So are you saying in malwarebytes I should or shouldnt try removing the selected files?

My Computer

If Malwarebytes finds suspect files I would tell it to remove them. On the other subject of it stalling that's why I suggest trying it in Safe Mode. perhaps I misread what you said.

Most computers come with either a recovery partition which is available through some process which is normally outlined in the literature that comes with it, or they have a recovery disk which is usable per their instructions, or a complete disk which you don't have.

What make is the machine? Where did you get it from? Those are two places you could check with.

You must be in the UK. I've shopped at Argos in the past ;-)
Try the service tab at Medion's website regarding what to do when the system needs reinstalling: MEDIONshop UK they should be able to at least give you the options available.
