Windows Update Behaving Badly

I recently completed a clean reinstall of Vista Ultimate x86. Once SP2 was installed I received appx. 17 updates that were installed flawlessly. I then received another group of twelve updates, eight of them listed as important. Four of the twelve installed and eight of them did not. I did a few more Windows Update searches for new updates and these eight were continuously offered to me.

I went to Microsoft, to the actual download page for each of these eight updates, and attempted to manually install them. I negligently failed to check the system requirements of them. Three of them installed with no problems. The other five updates returned the message "The version of Windows you have installed doesn't match the update you are trying to install". I again did a few more Windows Update searches for new updates and these five were continuously offered to me.

The five updates offered that were not for my version of Windows were KBs 2378111, 2564958, 2345886, 2633952 and 970430. One of them was for an update concerning Daylight Savings Time. I decided to hide the updates.

I then again used Windows Update and searched for new updates and was presented with one update, which is KB2570791. I installed it, again before checking to see what the system requirements are. I went to the Microsoft manual download page for this update and discovered that it was for Windows XP SP3. I did a search for "Windows Vista daylight savings time update" and clicked on the website for Microsoft's manual download page. The update was the same KB number, that being 2570791, as that for Windows XP SP3 but this time the system requirements listed Vista SP2. I realize that an update can apply to more than one version of Windows, so I'm not completely illiterate or moronic.

Does anyone know why Windows Update would offer me updates that do not pertain to my version of Windows? I did some research of the issue online and could not find any relevant articles or discussions concerning the matter.

Thank you for your time and any assistance provided.

Hello C.B.

Firstly, could you do the following for me please:

MGADiag

I would like you to make a MGADiag report for us please.

  1. Download MGADiag (by Microsoft) from the link found below:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

  2. Run the tool by double clicking on the file. Press Continue when prompted
  3. When it has finished, press Copy then paste this into your next post

Then try resetting the WU components: How do I reset Windows Update components?

I'll take a look at those updates now :)

Thank you for the prompt reply, tom982. I appreciate your willingness to assist me. On many past occasions when I needed assistance I received replies from someone in Great Britain, the home of my ancestors on both sides of my family.

During my reformat and clean install of Vista Ultimate x86 over the past few days I was having problems with Windows Update offering me the SP1 update and it would show as successfully installed when in fact it wasn't. It was offering me the SP1 update in a file that was only 1.9 MB so I knew then that something was wrong. I had to install SP1 using the 5 language standalone installer but before doing that I ran three Windows Update "Fixits" offered by Microsoft to no avail. None of them were the one you offer in your second link. The ones I ran were Fixit 50202, 50123 and wu.LB.136267880780100484.1.1.RUN. The results of these Fixits were to delete "Pending XmlIdentifier", delete "NextQueueEntryIndex", delete "AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving", installed PowerShell and fixed two instances of "Windows Update components must be repaired. The only third party application installed during the installation process was Microsoft Security Essentials. The thread is located here (http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/297398-unable-install-vista-sp1.html#post1374146) if you're interested because the only problems I experienced with the reinstall concerned Windows Update. Also, I validated my retail copy of Vista at the beginning of the installation process and checked again after the installation to be certain that it was indeed validated and it was so I don't think my Windows Update problems are related to validation.

Anyway, here are the results of the MGADiag I ran:

Hi CB,

That MGADiag log looks fine :) Let's dig deeper!

Could you run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) for me please?

Download link: Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) [May 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Make sure you download the right one for your computer. If you don't know whether you are 32 or 64bit, then let me know and I'll talk you through it.

Once you've downloaded that, run it and follow the prompts to install it. Upon completion of this, it will write a logfile, CheckSUR.persist.log, located here:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next post for me to have a look at please :)

Re: Unable To Install Vista SP1

Did you try the windows update system readiness tool?

Hey wither 3,

Yes I did. It showed no problems; however, Windows Update is still not functioning properly, considering that it has lately offered me updates for Windows Server and Windows XP SP3, which of course I attempted to install without researching the KB to see what the system requirements were. There were five of them and I learned they were not for my OS when I went to Microsoft's download page for each of them in my attempt to install them outside Windows Update. They kept reappearing whenever I checked for new updates so I decided to hide them and be done with it.

Hello C.B.,

Well, as you can see, the SURT log doesn't reveal anything. So let's have a look at a few other logs. Could you zip up the following files/folders and attach it to your next post for me please?

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS (The whole folder)

If the file size is too large to upload here, upload it to Mediafire:

Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire

Hopefully these will reveal something interesting :) Also, your computer isn't activated yet, so let's fix that:

To activate by using a direct connection

  1. Open Windows Activation by clicking the Start button
    4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818.jpg
, right-clicking Computer, clicking Properties, and then clicking Activate Windows now.*
  2. If Windows detects an Internet connection, click Activate Windows online now.
    18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48.jpg
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Type your Windows 7 product key when prompted, click Next, and then follow the instructions.
Source: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/activate-windows-7-on-this-computer

Then repeat the steps to produce an MGADiag log please: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/297437-windows-update-behaving-badly.html#post1374167
