Ran the 'Fix It' and then again tried to install the updates. Despite showing that 'Windows update components had been repaired, the updates again failed and an error Code80070490 was shown to be the problem. ALso ended up running the system readiness tool to no avail.
Will now look at the second link.

Could you upload the SURT log please:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Most of the time, running the SURT only aids the diagnosis of a problem, we can then work with what it reports to fix your problem.

The surt failed to install. Only found this 2 minutes ago.

Did you get an error code or message? If so, what was it?

Very, very strange. Could you please confirm something for me, are there strange symbols in this log entry:

(f) CBS Watchlist Package Missing 0x80070002 Microsoft-Windows-ServerFoundation-Base-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~et-EE~0.0.0.0 ð`ckage_for_KB2570791~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.1 Package registry presence failed, possibly an orphaned package on package watchlist

It should read Package_for_.....

The reason I ask is that I want to make sure that it isn't a problem at my end before I fix something.

If this extract highlighted in red is what you find strange Tom, then I can confirm that that is exactly how it appears in the log.

Thanks for confirming that, yes it was those funny symbols that I was asking about.

I have asked a friend for assistance with this as I've never seen anything like this happening before. Please bear with me whilst I wait for his opinion :) I'll keep you updated!

Hi Bob,

I have been told that this is caused by corruption in your registry

Command Prompt

  1. Open your start menu and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    REGEDIT /E "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\tom982.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-ServerFoundation-Base-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~et-EE~0.0.0.0"

  4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt on your Desktop. Please copy and paste the contents of this into your next post.

Hi Tom, having real problems now! As soon as the curser crosses the line into the quick launch/start area, it freezes and the only way to get it to move again is to reboot. Have tried a dozen times this morning to no avail. At the same time, at each reboot I get the configuration of updates.
I am going to backup everything onto my Ex. HD and then try once more. Meanwhile my wife is considering dumping this machine in favour of a laptop.
Will post back after the backup has finished.
