Yesterday's updates proving to be a problem

I was advised of some updates yesterday and I'm having trouble with them. I am told the install was successful and Windows Update shows they were successful (3 times!!!) but if I go to Windows Update it will show (still) that I have two important updates to install. Because I was getting the notice that the installation was successful, what really showed me there was a problem is the fact that I run Secunia PSI and it continued to show that the Exel Viewer involved needs to be updated.

I have attached 3 screenshots that I took yesterday. I originall posted in a different forum, but not only am I not getting any responses, but today I can't even get logged into that forum for some reason.

Hopefully someone here will be able to tell me what is going on ... Please. :(

Same problem here
Go to the updates, before installed, then right click and then hit hide; problem solved
The updates are corrupted in that they do not stop once installed.

Thanks for responding. I did as you instructed, but I'm wondering if these two programs were even actually updated. You said the updates are corrupted in that they do not stop once installed. I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean by that.

However, apparently Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2007 is a program that Secunia PSI keeps track of as to whether it's been updated and it is showing that the program has NOT been updated, even tho Windows Update says the updates were successful.

Guess I'll check with Secunia to see if there have been any problems with these updates.

If the problem causes the the computer not to update, MS will issue new updates. Dont be concerned about the situation. It is a problem experienced by all and MS will make the necessary changes.

I checked Secunia and it shows that the updates were not made. I hit scan again and it now shows as updated.

Hi Rich,

Hoping you could answer a question for me.

I am having the same problem with three updates (KB2760411, KB2760588 and KB2760590). The updates show as successful (installed three times as well!) but keep popping up. I did as you instructed and hid them. They are not showing up any more.

My question is, when you stated "Go to the updates, before installed, then right click and then hit hide; problem solved" is it ok to do this after Windows Update shows the updates as being installed and successful or should I do a fresh September Windows Update install and hide these updates so that they are not installed at all?

Thanks

I think that if they show as installed, they are actually installed. Then the system installs them again and again.
I would install them and then hide any new ones. You, then have the updates installed once, as it should be.

I checked Secunia and it shows that the updates were not made. I hit scan again and it now shows as updated.

I have hit "scan again" 3 times so far and PSI still shows this as needing an update.

Also, does anything need to be done about the fact that when I go to "Review updates" in "Windows Update" these two items appear 3 separate times and all show as successful?

--------------------------------------------------
I'm back to add some new info recieved from PSI. Apparently Microsoft TechNet is aware that there are issues for some users. Following is a quote taken from the response to my post:
"Despite Windows Update stating that the patch(es) have been installed the meta data has not changed for that program on your PC. On that basis PSI is correct to alert you to this fact & it will remain like that until Microsoft publish a revision addressing the problem."

I was also given two links. One is a more in-depth discussion of this on PSI with others who are having problems, and one for an active forum about this problem on Microsoft.

https://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/14...

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/w...

----------------------------------------------------------
I had opened PSI and selected to scan again while I was in this forum. It has finished and is now showing all my programs as updates, so, at least for my machine and OS this problem seems to be fixed.

Thanks for your patience and help.

Mine shows as sucessful, twice. In actuality they were installed twice over each other, leaving only one install.

I tried to give you a thumbs up and it wouldn't let me. It said I had to spread some around before giving you any more. I'd like them to know that you are getting it because you are about the only one who ever answers me.

Just wanted to update this thread.

The problem updates have disappeared from my hidden update list and when I check for updates nothing shows up, so it looks like the problem has been fixed.

The odd thing is that I have Windows Update set to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and I have not received or installed any fix for this.
