Hello Shawn/Brink, I am trying to download sp1 on my 32-bit vista home premium, but keep getting error code 0x800B0100 ... long story short, I am now running Check Disk to fix errors on my hard drive. I've followed your instructions above and tried methods 1, 4 and 5 and restarted my pc immediately, but absolutely nothing happens. How would I know if my pc is scanning or repairing errors on my hard drive when my pc turns back on? If I'm missing something, please let me know in full details because I'm a complete computer noob. I'll assume your response will be posted at the end of the last page, so that's where I'll be. Thanks in advance.

Re: Check Disk - chkdsk

Hello Kauser, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I would start off with running sfc /scannow command instead to see if it may help.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

However, with the 0x800B0100 error, you're most likely going to need to run the System Update Readiness Tool to try and fix it.

Error 0x800B0100 when you try to install Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Hello Shawn/Brink. I ran the System Update Readiness Tool (using the 2nd link provided above) and then went to this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/bb738089 to download the service pack 1. After 15 minutes it said: An internal error occurred while installing the service pack, giving me error code 0x800B0100 and telling me to see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101139 where I've tried the first two resolutions (resolutions 3 and 4 are out of my comprehension).

I then clicked your 3rd link provided above and went with only the
Method 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter where I was instructed to click the Fix It button below, which I could not find. So, instead I clicked the Run Now button. Later I selected the (recommended) option. Once the troubleshooting was done, in the 'fix status' section, there were three 'issues found' that were marked as 'not fixed' with a red X.

1 Windows Update error 0x80070057(2013-12-21-T-08_52_43A)
2 Problems installing recent updates
3 Cryptographic service components are not registered

Then I clicked Next, then chose 'Get online solutions tailored to your PC's specific problem'. Then I clicked Send. Under the 'send troubleshooter results' it said: An error occurred while sending your information to microsoft, (which is a dead end).

And finally, I went ahead with the 1st link provided above to run the SFC scan. I didn't know how to read the CBS.LOG and how to replace the files that SFC cannot fix (don't remember if my pc came with any DVD). In other words, I skipped the 'tip' part and jumped to the 'here is how' part. In the elevated command prompt, I typed "sfc /scannow" but nothing happened. You didn't mention to press Enter in 2A, so I didn't. I don't know what else to do from here (complete computer noob).

Can we take this conversation from here to
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/168289-sp1-error-0x800b0100.html ? Out of curiosity, what is the difference between 'quick reply', 'reply with quote' and '+ reply to thread'. In other words, which method of replying knocks on your door the quickest?

In that case, see the thread below to see if you are able to manually download and install the 32-bit SP1.

Re: Check Disk - chkdsk

In that case, see the thread below to see if you are able to manually download and install the 32-bit SP1.

http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/140470-why-sp1-may-not-available-you-how-get.html

Hi Shawn, I've noticed that your posts are very short (mine very long) and my questionS remain unanswered. I'd assume that you were in bad mood, but still, any help is much appreciated. So I've been to the link provided above and downloaded 32-bit standalone vista sp1, but the same error code 0x800B0100. In the same link on top I went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343. But you see, that link is for people who don't have sp1 offered through their windows update. I have sp1 in my windows update which I install in literally a minute every day. Then, when I download sp2, It tells me to go back and download sp1 first. I then download sp1 through internet, only to receive error code 0x800B0100. By the way I have read the entire page but I don't know if I have any "Hardware and software that if present will result in Windows Update not offering me a service pack".

I have a gut feeling that the problem lies in the SFC scan and/or Check Disk, so can you please go back and read my two previous posts about them and pin-point exactly what I need to do, this is where I need your help. Thanks in advance.

Re: System Files - SFC Command

Hello everyone, so I ran the SFC scan and here is what happened.

1) I typed
sfc /scannow. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

2) I typed
sfc /verifyonly. Windows Resource Protection found integrity violations. Details are included in the CBS.Log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Because of this message (it is what the note said in 2B), I retyped sfc /scannow. Same message as before: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. I retyped sfc /verifyonly for a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] time and again got the message “Windows Resource Protection found integrity violations. Details are included in the CBS.Log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log”.

3) I typed
sfc /scanfile=C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll . Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. This process last literally one second.

4) I typed
sfc /verifyfile=C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll . Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. This process last literally one second.

5) I typed
sfc /? and did nothing in the list. Was I supposed to do something here? This process last literally one second.

I closed the elevated command prompt but didn’t get the message to restart the computer. I couldn’t locate the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log folder. In my CBS folder there is: CBS, CBS.persist, CheckSUR and CheckSUR.persist. There is no mention of a CBS.Log . I then restarted my computer without being told to.

I repeated this process twice more. After restarting the 3rd time, I immediately downloaded the 32-bit service pack 1, but 15 minutes later, got the error code 0x800B0100. Question #1 How would I know that the SFC scan ran correctly before or during the restart (my three restarts were completely normal), what are the indications? Question#2 What happened to my CBS.log page, and can anyone explain in easy words for this noob how to read the contents of the CBS.log page (once located, that is)? Question #3 Can anyone explain in tiny details how to deal with / replace the files manually that SFC scan can't fix? Thanks in advance.

Re: Check Disk - chkdsk

Yes sir, I did. I ran the SFC scan and restarted the computer three times, then downloaded the service pack 1, but got the error code 0x800B0100. I then downloaded and ran the system update readiness tool, restarted my computer, immediately ran the SFC scan and again ran the sp1, but the same result. This brings us to my "unanswered" question from my last post:

Question #1 How would I know that the SFC scan ran correctly before or during the restart, what does it look like, what are the indications? There was nothing unusual about my restarts. I then ran a system restore looking for a "restore point dated before the bad file occurred". I didn't know what bad file I was looking for, but more importantly, my computer only goes as far back as two days ago. I then read the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial which brings us to my another "unanswered" question from my last post (because I don't know where my CBS.log folder is):

Question#2 What happened to my CBS.log page, and can you explain in easy words for this noob how to read the contents of the CBS.log page (once located, that is)? I don't know how to manually replace the files that SFC scan can't fix, on top of that I don't have the vista installation dvd. So can you explain to me in tiny details how to deal with / replace the files manually that SFC scan can't fix?

PS: All of my previous posts on this page are missing. Any idea why? Thanks in advance bro.

Q1) When you run SFC again, it will tell you if it anything is still wrong or not. The yellow Tip box at the top of the same SFC tutorial below can help show you how to create a sfcdetails.txt file that contains your SFC results.
Q2) Once you create the sfcdetails.txt file and upload and attach it here, we'll have a better understanding of what SFC was unable to repair.

Hi Shawn, I typed sfc /scannow and it told me (you guessed it): Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. I closed the Prompt and went to my CBS folder to locate my CBS.log and (you guessed it) it doesn't exist. I opened the Prompt and typed the following:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
... and pressed Enter, but absolutely nothing happened. A minute later I closed my prompt without getting any sfcdetails.txt file. My theory: because my SFC scan is unable to generate the CBS.log, there won't be any sfcdetails.txt file.

Secondly, I briefly looked at your 2nd link and noticed that uploading and posting a file with "paint" (mspaint.exe) and "snipping tool" tutorials are for windows 8 users, because they are from eightforums.com, so just wanted to confirm if exactly the same process takes place in vista as well and it would be safe. If not, then please find me the appropriate link for a vista user. I honestly wish you had made a video tutorial (either here or on YouTube) just like the one you made about System Restore.

Hi NoelDP. So I went to microsoft.com and in the "install and run the system update readiness tool" section, I wasn't given the chance to save or run. In other words, it jumped the point #1 and went straight to point #2, where I clicked yes (meaning I installed it). Once I closed that, I immediately ran SFC scan, got the same message as before, couldn't find the CBS.log page, ran the sp1, got the error 0x800B0100. By the way, the 3rd point "windows update error code" has no screenshot below (I'm using Chrome). As for point 4, I'll send you my CBS folder if I can have your email please. Bottomline, I'm stuck because my SFC scan can't produce the CBS.log page.

PS: This is a family laptop, there is only one account (no administrator account) and no password for everyone's comfort, in case it is relevant.

My Computer

In that case, I can only recommend to either try a repair install, or clean install Vista to start fresh, then try installing all of your Windows Updates. :(

To be honest, using the findstr command is about as much use as a chocolate teapot.
The CBS log contains a LOT more data than most people (seemingly including MS) realise.

Please post the full CBS.log and CheckSUR.log files.

For you, “using the findstr command is about as much use as a chocolate teapot”, but not for me. I mean look at your credentials: Microsoft Community Contributor Award, VF Team, Guru, VIP Member etc, I am just a low level computer noob.

I repeat that I don’t have the CBS.log , CheckSUR.log and sfcdetails.txt files. However I do have CBS, CheckSUR and sfcdetails files (without the .log part) and I hope that they are exactly the same. Here they are:

I'll post a fix for the missing files later.

The CBS log is also interesting - and I suspect directly relates to the CoreOS problem, as well as the damages files.

The error-list is too long to post - but here's an example.

I suspect that there are permissions problems within the registry - but we'll have to wait and see on that.

I've uploaded a file - ksraa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder ksraa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Hi NoelDP, I downloaded the file, but couldn’t save it (Chrome doesn’t offer that option) and dragged it from My Documents to my Desktop. Once there, I right-clicked on it but didn’t find the “Extract All” option. Instead I clicked “Extract Files” option. I clicked nothing in the “Extraction path and options”, but OK. I didn’t know how to “extract to the default location”, but yeah there was a new folder named ksraa on the Desktop. I copied the two-part content from “Packages” and pasted in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages (which was empty earlier) and copied the page from “Manifests” and pasted in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests (which was also empty earlier). I didn’t know what you meant by “running the CheckSUR tool” so I ran the System Update Readiness Tool without the sfc scan (hope I didn’t screw up). Here are the new files:

Also take a look at these two videos to see if they can help solve my case:

PS: When I was browsing the files above to be uploaded, in the small window, all the five files from yesterday were also present. I couldn't figure out how to remove them, so if they show up above, please pardon the error / inexperience.

That's fine - the CheckSUR log is now clear :)

Please IGNORE the blandishments of youtube videos - mostly they are either badly-made sales pitches, or dangerous.

With any luck you should be able to install the Service Pack now.

Hi NoelDP, you did it man. Yesterday I installed service pack 1, then 71 updates followed. Today I installed service pack 2, then 112 updates followed. Once all the updates were done, the Internet Explorer 9 was already pre-installed on my computer, which is what I was after all along. You saved me a visit to a computer technician where they would have checked my computer for child porn (not that I have it) before asking me about the problem. Thank you both a million times.

So how do you do it? How did you figure out my problem? Tell me in details about my problem. Educate this computer noob, that way I don't have to bother / depend on others when I'm in need (unless you're sure it's out of my comprehension).

Out of curiosity: Do you do this for a living? Are you a computer technician in real life? Do you have a degree in computer science, or a related field?
