Aspire 8920g win vista updating error 8024a000

My issue is after replacing two defective hard drives 1-wd 320 & 1seagate 500 with a new wd black 750 and after using the acer recovery software i can't update windows. I get an error messege when trying to update, the error message is 8024a000 there are a few other problems i think all pertain to the same problem. One is that i can't use microsoft websites very well, it tells me to download ie8 which is not for win vista & i can't install ie9. Also some of microsoft websites will not let me on, i get an error message which is ( operation aborted ) fyi - i have built and worked on computers all my life and never had an issue like this. I have used my recovery software many times on the other two hard drives with no issues until they died. Any help with this problem would be very helpful & appreciated
